Hervey Bay Airport was established in 1963 for commercial aviation. It reopened in mid-2005 following an 11.5 million dollar upgrade that included a new terminal building and the extension of the existing 1,500 metre runway to 2,000 metres, allowing it to accommodate jet services for Virgin Australia. Sunshine Express Airlines operated daily services from Brisbane until ceasing scheduled operations on 1 October 2006, after a proposed takeover by Regional Express Airlines fell through and QantasLink announced its own Brisbane services. The airport was Queensland's fastest-growing in 2006, with passenger numbers almost doubling that year. A planned JetGo service to Melbourne's Essendon Airport and Brisbane, announced in June 2017, never got off the ground due to insufficient bookings, and JetGo subsequently went into voluntary administration. In November 2023, Jetstar announced a new direct service between Melbourne (Tullamarine) and Hervey Bay, which commenced in June 2024.
Hervey Bay Airport continues to operate as the Fraser Coast's main air link, with Jetstar flying to Melbourne and Sydney and QantasLink serving Brisbane. The airport is owned and run by Fraser Coast Regional Council.
