Northern Peninsula Airport (YNPE) serves the town of Bamaga near the very tip of Queensland's Cape York Peninsula, making it the gateway airfield for Australia's northernmost mainland communities. Operated by the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council, it offers a single sealed runway and CTAF radio procedures typical of remote Queensland aerodromes, with a wartime history stretching back to 1942.
Northern Peninsula Airport, historically known as Bamaga Airport or Bamaga/Injinoo Airport, is a public aerodrome serving Bamaga, a small town near the northern tip of the Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland. It is operated by the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council and provides the principal air link for the remote communities of the Northern Peninsula Area. For a visiting VFR pilot it is a remote, single-runway strip with no instrument approach, set in one of the most isolated corners of the Australian mainland.
The airfield lies in uncontrolled airspace under Brisbane Centre, roughly 5 nautical miles southeast of Injinoo in Queensland, Australia. Coordinates place the field at approximately 10.9508 degrees South, 142.459 degrees East.
Northern Peninsula Airport has a single physical runway, 13/31, with a hard surface measuring 6021 feet in length. Both runway directions are lit, but there is no ILS or other instrument approach available.
Traffic at the aerodrome uses the common traffic advisory frequency 126.5 MHz. Flight service is available on 120.3 MHz through Brisbane Centre, which provides the overlying air traffic service for this uncontrolled aerodrome.
The airfield was built in late 1942 under the name Jacky Jacky Field and was renamed Higgins Field in 1943 in honour of Flight Lieutenant Brian Hartley Higgins. During the Second World War it operated as a dispersal field for Horn Island and hosted a number of Royal Australian Air Force units, including No. 1 and No. 5 Repair and Salvage Units, No. 7 Squadron, No. 23 Squadron, No. 33 Operational Base Unit, No. 34 Squadron, and the 105th Light Field Ambulance. A RAAF No. 52 Radar Station was also established nearby at Mutee Head.
The airport continues to serve as the air link for Bamaga and the wider Northern Peninsula Area under the operation of the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council. Skytrans Australia has operated scheduled services connecting the airport with Cairns and Horn Island.
