Perth International Airport (YPPH) is Western Australia's principal air gateway, lying on the eastern fringe of the city near Guildford. Operated as a major international and domestic hub, it offers a visiting VFR pilot two long, lit hard-surfaced runways, full radar and tower services, and instrument approaches, making it a significant piece of controlled airspace to plan around rather than a casual drop-in field.

Overview

Perth International Airport serves the city of Perth, the capital of Western Australia, and is one of the country's busiest airports for both domestic and international traffic. For a simulator pilot it is of interest chiefly as a major controlled aerodrome with parallel long runways, full radar coverage and a general aviation area handling charter traffic, offering a realistic large-airport arrival or departure exercise on the western side of the continent.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits east of Perth's city centre, in the suburb that takes the airport's name, near Guildford. It is controlled airspace served by Perth Radar, approach and departure control, tower and ground frequencies, reflecting its status as a major international hub with continuous radar coverage over the terminal area.

Runways

Perth International Airport has two parallel hard-surfaced runways. The main runway, 03/21, is 11,297 feet long, lit, and equipped with ILS on both directions. The secondary runway, 06/24, is 7,083 feet long and lit, with ILS available on runway 24. Field elevation is 56 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services include Perth Radar approach and departure on 132.95 MHz, approach/delivery on 123.6 MHz, delivery on 118.55 MHz, ground on 121.7 MHz and 122.2 MHz, tower on 127.4 MHz, area control on 135.25 MHz, and ATIS on 123.8 MHz. A discrete frequency of 118.7 MHz is also listed for Perth Radar. Instrument approaches are available, with ILS serving both directions of the main runway and one direction of the secondary runway.

History

Civil aviation in Perth began at earlier airfields at Maylands and on the city's foreshore at Langley Park, but the Maylands site proved too small and a new location was chosen for what would become today's airport. Before civilian flying could start, the site was taken over for military purposes during the Second World War, serving as a temporary base for the Royal Australian Air Force and the United States Navy. Civil air services by Qantas Empire Airways began in 1944, when the field was known as Guildford Aerodrome. Further airline carriers followed, and in 1952 the aerodrome was renamed Perth International Airport after gaining international status. A single terminal building handled all operations from 1962 until 1986, when a new international terminal and a control tower, the tallest in Australia at the time, opened.

The Airfield Today

Perth Airport today operates as a major international and domestic hub with multiple passenger terminals and a dedicated general aviation area handling charter flights. It provides full radar, approach, tower and ground control services alongside ATIS broadcasts, and both of its runways are equipped with lighting, with ILS available for instrument approaches to the main runway and to one direction of the secondary runway.
