Hulunbuir Hailar Airport lies in Hailar District, Hulunbuir, in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. Originally built in 1932 and long known as Hailar Dongshan Airport, it has grown from a modest stopover field into a substantial regional airport with international connections, reflecting its position near the Russian and Mongolian frontiers. For the simulator pilot it presents an interesting combination of a remote grassland setting with two long, well-equipped parallel runways.
The airport sits at coordinates 49.205 N, 119.827 E at an elevation of 2156 feet, serving Hailar District within the prefecture-level city of Hulunbuir in Inner Mongolia. Its position in the far northeast of the autonomous region places it close to the borders with Russia and Mongolia, a factor reflected in its historical role as a stopover on routes toward Chita and other border destinations.
The field has two parallel physical runways. The main runway, 09/27, is 9162 feet long with a hard surface and lighting, and runway 27 is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches. A second parallel runway, 09L/27R, is 8471 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit, but without an ILS.
The tower callsign is HAILAR TWR, operating on 118.1 MHz. Runway 27 is served by an ILS for instrument approaches; no other specific navaid frequencies are available.
The airfield was first built in 1932 at its present elevation of 661 metres. During the 1950s it served as a stopover on the Beijing-Chita and Pyongyang-Chita international routes, and scheduled service between Hohhot and Hailar began in 1958. A new passenger terminal was completed in 1980, and from 1988 the Hulunbuir Prefecture funded construction of a new cement-concrete runway 1,800 metres long, later extended in stages to 2,800 metres with a width of 45 metres and a 36-centimetre-thick concrete surface, built south of and offset from the original strip, which was retained as a parallel taxiway. During this expansion the Civil Aviation Administration installed an instrument landing system, night-flying facilities, a VOR station and near and far range beacons, bringing the field up to 4C flight-area standard and enabling operations by types such as the Boeing 737 and BAe 146. A further passenger terminal of 7,655 square metres opened in 2007. The airport was formally approved as an international port by the State Council in 1993 and authorised for international opening in 1995, with international service beginning in May 1996 on the Hailar-Chita route flown by Air China Inner Mongolia using the BAe 146. The airport was renamed Hulunbuir Hailar Airport in August 2010. An auxiliary terminal building, built in the form of three yurts, was constructed in 2012. By 2016 it had become the largest regional airport by passenger volume in Inner Mongolia and in the wider Northeast and North China regions, operating 59 routes to 45 cities. In January 2020 the flight-area classification was upgraded from 4C to 4D, with corresponding upgrades to fire and rescue and medical rescue levels, making it capable of handling aircraft up to the Boeing 757-200 and the first airport in the Inner Mongolia Civil Aviation Airport Group with 4D classification. In 2025 it was renamed Hulunbuir Hailar International Airport.
Hulunbuir Hailar Airport today functions as a major regional hub for Inner Mongolia, handling both domestic and international traffic, including routes to destinations such as Chita, Vladivostok and Hong Kong. It is rated to 4D flight-area standard, supports aircraft up to Boeing 757-200 size, and in 2025 recorded record international passenger numbers. It is served by a range of domestic carriers operating routes to cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Hohhot, Chongqing and others across China.
