Tianjin Binhai International Airport (ZBTJ/TSN) is the principal civil airport serving Tianjin municipality in North China, a major hub for Tianjin Airlines and Okay Airways and a focus city for Air China. Tianjin Binhai International Airport lies in the Dongli district of Tianjin, one of China's four municipalities, and functions as the city's sole passenger and cargo gateway. It is operated by the Civil Aviation Administration of China and serves as the hub for Tianjin Airlines and privately owned Okay Airways, as well as a focus city for Air China. The field is also notable as the site of an Airbus A320 final assembly line and an A330 completion and delivery centre, making it a distinctive stop for anyone interested in large commercial jet operations in a virtual environment.
The airport sits within Chinese controlled airspace in the Dongli district of Tianjin, close to the city centre and within the wider Jing-Jin-Ji (Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei) region. It lies relatively near Beijing Capital International Airport and forms part of a dense cluster of major airports serving northern China, so pilots should expect coordination with approach control over a busy stretch of airspace.
The airport has two physical runways, both hard-surfaced and lit, each fitted with ILS. Runway 16L/34R measures 10,491 ft in length. Runway 16R/34L is listed with differing figures for each direction, 10,486 ft from the 16R threshold and 11,803 ft from the 34L threshold, suggesting a displaced threshold or extended paved length in one direction. Both runways are suitable for the full range of large commercial aircraft that operate from the field.
Tianjin Approach is available on 118.2 MHz, with ATIS broadcast on 126.4 MHz. Ground movements are handled on 121.75 MHz, with a separate ramp control frequency also on 118.2 MHz. Tianjin Tower operates across several frequencies, including 118.2 MHz, 118.425 MHz, 118.875 MHz and 130 MHz. The field is equipped with ILS on both runways, supporting instrument approaches in poor weather.
Tianjin Binhai International Airport traces its origins to 1939, making it one of the older airports in the region. On 1 August 1950, the first civil aircraft of the newly founded People's Republic of China took off from the airfield, earning it recognition as the 'Cradle of New China's Civil Aviation'. Before 2005, commercial flights were handled in what later became the airport's cargo terminal; a larger passenger terminal was built in 2006 and substantially expanded around 2010. A second runway was completed in May 2009 to accommodate rising passenger numbers, and Terminal 2 came into use on 28 August 2014. The airport later became a centre for Airbus manufacturing, hosting an A320 final assembly line from 2008 and an A330 completion and delivery centre finished in 2017.
Today Tianjin Binhai International Airport is a large international airport handling scheduled domestic and international services for numerous Chinese and foreign carriers, and remains the hub for Tianjin Airlines and Okay Airways as well as a focus city for Air China. In 2025 the airport handled just under 20 million passengers, ranking it among the busier airports in China. It continues to serve as a significant air cargo centre and hosts ongoing Airbus assembly and delivery operations alongside its passenger operations.
