Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport is the principal international gateway for Henan province, lying some 37 kilometres southeast of downtown Zhengzhou. A major hub for Cargolux and a focus city for several Chinese carriers, it is one of the busiest airports in central China for both passenger and cargo traffic, offering a long hard-surfaced runway well suited to a wide range of simulated traffic.
Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport serves Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province in south-central China, and is owned and operated by Henan Airport Group. It is a hub for Cargolux and a focus city for China Southern Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, West Air, Lucky Air and Donghai Airlines, and by 2018 had become the busiest airport in central China for both passengers and cargo. For a simulator pilot it offers the character of a large, modern Chinese international hub with a single long, wide runway handling heavy jet traffic alongside substantial cargo operations.
The airport lies in Xinzheng, in the districts of Xuedian and Mengzhuang, about 37 kilometres southeast of downtown Zhengzhou. It sits at coordinates 34.5183N, 113.84E at an elevation of 486 feet.
The field has a single physical runway, 12/30, oriented roughly northwest-southeast. It is 11,154 feet long with a hard surface and is lit.
Zhengzhou Ground operates on 121.75 MHz, using the callsign Zhengzhou Ground, while Zhengzhou Tower operates on 130 MHz using the callsign Zhengzhou Tower. ATIS information is broadcast on 128.45 MHz. No ILS approach is available at the field.
The airport opened on 28 August 1997, replacing the older Zhengzhou Dongjiao Airport, which had been built in 1956 close to the city centre and had become unsuitable for jet operations as urban development encroached on it; Dongjiao Airport was subsequently demolished to make way for the Zhengdong New Area. The new field, originally named Zhengzhou Xuedian Airport after its home township, began construction in 1993 and opened with a single runway, designated 12R/30L, of 3,400 metres, and a terminal designed for 3.8 million passengers a year. In 2000 the airport was approved as China's 21st international airport, and between 2005 and 2007 its original terminal was substantially expanded and renovated, reopening as the current Terminal 1 in December 2007. A major phase-two expansion, approved in 2013, added a second runway, 12L/30R, and a second terminal, Terminal 2, together with a ground traffic centre; construction ran from 2012 to 2015, with Terminal 2 and the ground traffic centre opening in December 2015 and the second runway opening on 7 January 2016, making Zhengzhou the first airport in central China with two terminals and two runways. The rise of nearby Foxconn's Zhengzhou production facility from 2010 drove rapid growth in cargo traffic, and the airport also began attracting long-haul services, including Emirates flights from Dubai via Yinchuan from 2016 to 2018, non-stop Sichuan Airlines service to Vancouver from November 2016, and non-stop Jetstar service to Melbourne from December 2017.
Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport continues to operate as a major international and domestic hub, with two terminals and two runways supporting substantial passenger and cargo traffic, and remains a key base for cargo operations linked to nearby manufacturing industry.
