The airport lies in Hainan province, about 15 kilometres northwest of Sanya city centre, on the southern tip of Hainan Island. As a major hub airport it sits within controlled airspace appropriate to a large international field, with the city of Sanya and its coastline forming the principal geographic reference to the south and east.
The airport has a single physical runway, 08/26, measuring 11,154 feet in length with a hard surface. Both directions are lit and equipped with ILS, giving instrument approach capability from either end.
The tower callsign is Fenghuang Tower, operating on 118.15 MHz. ILS approaches are available for both runway 08 and runway 26.
Sanya Phoenix International Airport has grown into a major hub for Hainan province, and by 2025 it ranked as the 24th busiest airport in China. A railway station on the Hainan Western Ring High-Speed Railway, serving the airport, opened immediately to its north in December 2015, reflecting the field's integration into wider regional transport development.
Today the airport operates as a large international hub handling both domestic and international airline traffic into Hainan. Its single runway, fully lit and served by ILS at both ends, supports a high volume of scheduled operations, making it a prominent and easily identifiable destination for flights into southern China.
