Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport is the principal gateway for Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, lying some 33 km northeast of the city centre in the Yaoqiang Subdistrict of Licheng District. It is a large, ILS-equipped international airport with a single long paved runway, serving as a hub for Shandong Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and GX Airlines. For a visiting sim pilot it offers a straightforward long-runway approach into a busy East China commercial hub.

Overview

Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport serves Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province in eastern China, and takes its name from the Yaoqiang Subdistrict immediately to its south. It is a major domestic and international airport, acting as a hub for Shandong Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and GX Airlines, and has in the past supported intercontinental services to Los Angeles and Frankfurt. For a visual flight simulation pilot the field is notable for its single very long runway, full ILS coverage, and its role as one of the busier airports in eastern China.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies approximately 33 km (21 mi) northeast of central Jinan, immediately north of the Yaoqiang Subdistrict in Licheng District, Shandong Province, close to the border with Zhangqiu District. It sits on the Jinan Ring Expressway and is connected to the Beijing-Shanghai and Qingdao-Yinchuan Expressways, giving a clear road pattern as a visual reference from the air. Coordinates for the field are 36.8583N 117.215E, with a field elevation of 72 ft.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 01/19, measuring 11,803 ft with a hard surface. It is lit and equipped with an ILS on both directions, making it usable for instrument approaches from either end.

Radio & Navigation

Jinan Yaoqiang is served by an ATIS on 127.05 MHz and a tower frequency of 118.55 MHz, with the tower callsign JINAN TWR. The single runway is equipped with an ILS.

History

Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport was completed and opened for traffic on 26 July 1992, replacing the former Jinan Zhangzhuang Airport. Ground was broken on 15 November 1990 following provincial government proposals submitted in 1985 to adapt Shandong's civil aviation capacity to the province's economic development needs. On 17 December 1997 the Civil Aviation Administration of China reviewed the field and set its flight zone level at 4D. A major expansion of the terminal area began in 2003 with an investment of 1.6 billion yuan, and the enlarged terminal, including a new terminal building and apron, entered service on 28 March 2005; the original terminal was converted into a cargo facility. Construction of a south concourse began in March 2012 and this opened on 30 December 2015, adding further apron space, boarding bridges, and transfer and VIP security facilities. In December 2016 Sichuan Airlines launched a non-stop intercontinental service from Jinan to Los Angeles, and in February 2022 Condor began direct flights to Frankfurt, a service that ended in January 2023 in favour of a route to Hefei.

The Airfield Today

Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport functions as a hub for Shandong Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and GX Airlines and ranked as the 25th busiest airport in China in 2025, handling over 20.3 million passengers that year. The airport has continued to expand, with a north concourse expansion proposed in 2017 and a long-term master plan envisaging three terminal buildings and four runways to support up to 80 million passengers annually. The field's single runway is fully lit and ILS-equipped, and the airport remains one of the principal air gateways to Shandong Province.
