Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport is a major international hub serving Chongqing in southwestern China, located in Liangjiang some 19 kilometres north of the city centre. It is a large, heavily used civil airport with four parallel runways and full instrument approach facilities, making it a straightforward but busy destination for simulator pilots flying airliner or business-jet operations into western China.
Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport is the principal gateway for the city of Chongqing, operated as a major aviation hub for airlines across western China including China Express, Chongqing Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Sichuan Airlines and West Air, and serving as a focus city for Air China, Shandong Airlines, Tianjin Airlines and XiamenAir. For a simulator pilot it offers a large, modern international airport with long, well-equipped runways and full ATC coverage, set against the dramatic hill country of the Chongqing region.
The airport lies in Liangjiang, Chongqing Municipality, about 19 kilometres north of the Chongqing city centre. It sits at coordinates 29.72 N, 106.64 E at an elevation of 1,335 feet, within controlled airspace served by Chongqing Approach, Ground and Tower.
The airfield has two physical parallel runways aligned 02/20, both hard-surfaced and lit, and both equipped with ILS. The easterly pair, 02R/20L, is the longer at around 11,170 to 11,200 feet, while the westerly pair, 02L/20R, measures 10,504 feet. The four-runway layout allows independent parallel operations appropriate to a major international hub.
Chongqing Approach can be reached on 125.2 MHz, with ATIS broadcast on 126.4 MHz. Ground movements are handled by Chongqing Ground on 121.75 MHz, and Chongqing Tower controls on 118.2 MHz. Both runway pairs are equipped with ILS, supporting instrument approaches in the frequent low-visibility conditions of the Sichuan basin.
The airport lies in the Liangjiang New Area north of the Chongqing city centre; the built-up sprawl of the city and the Jialing and Yangtze river valleys to the south provide the principal visual references when approaching from that direction.
Civil aviation in Chongqing dates back to the 1920s, with Baishiyi Airport, completed in 1938, becoming one of only four operational airports in China at the time. Jiangbei Airport opened on 22 January 1990, taking over commercial services from Baishiyi, which then continued as a military airfield. Following the elevation of Chongqing to municipality status in 1997, the Civil Aviation Administration of China established a local branch there. The airport has since been expanded through several major phases: a second phase completed in December 2004, a third in December 2010, and a fourth runway brought into use at the end of 2024, alongside a new satellite terminal opened in April 2025. Jiangbei Airport was recognised by Airports Council International as the best airport in its size category in both 2017 and 2018.
Chongqing Jiangbei remains one of China's busiest airports, ranked among the country's top ten for passenger traffic and continuing to expand as part of plans to become a major international hub and the largest airport in western China by 2030. It handles both domestic and international scheduled services across multiple terminals, with a dense network of routes operated by major Chinese carriers.
