Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport (ZUGY/KWE) is a major international gateway serving Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province in southwest China, sitting on a high plateau at over 3,700 feet above sea level. It is the hub for Colorful Guizhou Airlines and a focus city for China Southern Airlines, handling a substantial volume of domestic and international traffic, and offers a single long, lit hard-surfaced runway well suited to widebody operations.
Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport lies southeast of Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province in southwest China, and is the principal air gateway to the region. It serves as the hub for Colorful Guizhou Airlines and a focus city for China Southern Airlines, with a wide network of domestic routes and a growing number of international and regional services. For a simulator pilot, the field is notable for its high elevation on the Guizhou plateau and its long single runway capable of handling the largest widebody airliners.
The airport is located in Nanming District, on the eastern side of Guiyang, Guizhou Province, China, roughly 11 km from the city centre. As a large international airport it sits within controlled airspace appropriate to a major Chinese aerodrome, with approach control provided under the callsign GUIYING APP.
The airfield has a single physical runway, 01/19, of 10,496 ft (3,200 m) and hard surface, lit for night operations. There is no ILS approach available.
Radio services include GUIYING APP on 126.05 MHz for approach control, an ATIS broadcast on 127.05 MHz, GUIYANG GND on 121.6 MHz for ground movements, and GUIYANG TWR on 118.3 MHz for tower control.
Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport opened on 28 May 1997 and took its current name on 19 January 2006, becoming southwest China's fourth international airport. The field exceeded its original design capacity of five million passengers a year by 2010, prompting an expansion project worth around 3.4 billion yuan, begun in September 2010, aimed at raising annual capacity to 15.5 million passengers and cargo throughput to 220,000 tonnes. In June 2017 the airport implemented an Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) system in partnership with VariFlight to improve on-time performance and operational safety. On 24 March 2019, Hainan Airlines began a weekly service to Paris, marking the first international long-haul air link for Guiyang and Guizhou Province.
Today Guiyang Longdongbao is a busy hub for Colorful Guizhou Airlines and a focus city for China Southern Airlines, supporting an extensive network of domestic routes across China alongside a smaller number of international and regional services, including flights to destinations such as Bangkok, Seoul-Incheon, Macau, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur. The airport is tagged as a joint military-civilian facility. Business and general aviation operators typically arrange ground handling through a dedicated aviation services office at the field.
