Ibiza Airport (LEIB/IBZ) is a busy Aena-operated international gateway on the southwestern coast of Ibiza, serving both the island itself and neighbouring Formentera. For the sim pilot it offers a single long, ILS-equipped runway set against a coastal and hilly backdrop, with a mix of scheduled jet traffic and seasonal charter flying that varies sharply between a hectic summer and a quiet winter.
Ibiza Airport, ICAO code LEIB and IATA code IBZ, lies close to the town of Sant Josep de sa Talaia in the southwest of the island, about 7 km from Ibiza Town. It is operated by Aena and functions as the principal air gateway to the Balearic islands of Ibiza and Formentera. The field is of particular interest to a visiting VFR or IFR pilot for its single, generously long instrument runway, its role as a major seasonal holiday hub, and its setting on a relatively small Mediterranean island where terrain and coastline both feature in the approach picture.
The airport sits in the southwest of Ibiza, near Sant Josep de sa Talaia and around 7 km southwest of Ibiza Town. Approach control in the area is provided by Palma, reflected in the published Palma APP frequency, indicating that arriving and departing traffic is worked within the wider Palma terminal environment before being handed to the tower.
Ibiza Airport has a single physical runway, 06/24, 9,169 feet long with a hard surface. It is lit and equipped with an ILS, and the field elevation is 16 feet.
Radio services at Ibiza include Palma APP on 118.125 MHz and a further approach frequency on 119.8 MHz, an ATIS broadcast on 117.8 MHz, Ground on 121.8 MHz, and Tower on 118.5 MHz. Runway 06/24 is served by an ILS, supporting instrument approaches to the field.
The airport reopened on 1 April 1958 in response to the rapid growth of tourism in the Balearic Islands, with its first destinations that year including Palma, Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid. On 15 July 1966 it reopened to international traffic and customs, moving to round-the-clock operation. The field's history includes a serious accident on 7 January 1972, when Iberia Airlines Flight 602, a Sud Aviation Caravelle, struck a mountain while on approach to Ibiza Airport.
Ibiza Airport is operated by Aena and continues to handle substantial commercial passenger traffic through a single terminal, with activity heavily concentrated in the summer season and much quieter winter operations. The airport has been recognised at Level 3 ("Optimization") of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.
