Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 8,584 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 8,584 ft of the 10,977 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,322 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by a Boeing 777-300 aircraft. The journey began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 16R at RJAA Narita International Airport in Japan.
As the aircraft took off, it reached a liftoff speed of 198 knots, covering a takeoff distance of 6,100 feet, which was 57% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 74°F and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 150°.
Following the takeoff, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile south of RJAA Narita International Airport. The climb phase involved a significant increase in altitude, from 1,216 feet above sea level to 29,934 feet, over a distance of 63 nautical miles, and took approximately 16 minutes to complete.
The enroute level cruise phase began 4 miles northwest of Hadano, Japan, and lasted for 527 minutes, covering a distance of 3,873 nautical miles. The aircraft then underwent several climb phases, each involving a significant increase in altitude, before entering another level cruise phase.
The final climb phase began at a latitude of 23.0040996 and a longitude of 64.3950366, and involved a climb from 31,846 feet above sea level to 35,807 feet, over a distance of 28 nautical miles, and took approximately 3 minutes to complete. The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 13 nautical miles.
The enroute descent phase began 27 miles northwest of OMSN Sir Abu Nu'ayr Airport in the United Arab Emirates, and involved a descent from 37,875 feet above sea level to 9,135 feet, over a distance of 84 nautical miles, and took approximately 13 minutes to complete. The aircraft then underwent several climb and level cruise phases before entering the final approach phase.
The final approach to runway 30R at OBBI Bahrain International Airport was made from the southeast, with the aircraft heading 303.0° at an altitude of 1,500 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway threshold. The landing was made on the runway, which had a length of 10,977 feet.
The landing was characterized by a touchdown point that was 1,979 feet beyond the touchdown zone, a touchdown speed of 151 knots, which was slightly fast, and a touchdown rate of -225 feet per minute, which was fair. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 36 feet from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 35 feet from the centerline.
The total landing distance was 8,341 feet, which was 76% of the runway length. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took 7 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 4,742 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 702 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 236,430 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at OBBI Bahrain International Airport on runway 30R. The final approach was initiated from the south east, heading 303.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,500 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down 1,979 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the target.
The touchdown speed of 151 knots was slightly above the target, indicating that the pilot may have been unable to fully arrest the aircraft's descent before touchdown. The touchdown rate of -225 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, suggesting that the pilot managed to control the aircraft's descent to some extent. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 36 feet from the centreline, which may have been due to a combination of factors including wind and pilot error.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 82°F and a wind speed of 7 knots from 320°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 7 knots. These conditions may have contributed to the aircraft's misaligned touchdown and rollout. The total landing distance of 8,341 feet was 76% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range.
The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 35 feet from the centreline, which may have been due to the same factors that contributed to the initial touchdown misalignment. Overall, while the landing was successful, there were several areas for improvement, including the touchdown speed, touchdown position, and rollout alignment.
