Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,597 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,597 m of the 2,115 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 424 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A321 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Frankfurt Airport, taking 7 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 07C, with a takeoff distance of 1,199 meters, which was 30% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 146 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 19°C temperature and winds of 11 knots at 39 degrees. The crosswind was 5 knots, while the headwind was 9 knots. The enroute climb began approximately 1 mile northeast of Frankfurt Airport, with the aircraft ascending from 1,367 feet above sea level to 35,437 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,070 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 133 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started overhead Springe, Germany, and lasted for 14 minutes, covering a distance of 95 nautical miles. The enroute descent began overhead Sommerland, Germany, and took the aircraft from 35,150 feet above sea level to 1,381 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,769 feet in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 83 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 14 at Westerland Sylt Airport was made from the northwest, with the aircraft heading 143.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,334 feet above ground level. The landing took place on a runway length of 2,115 meters, with the threshold height being well above the target. The threshold speed was good at 142 knots, while the touchdown distance was also good at 423 meters. However, the touchdown speed was a little fast at 139 knots, and the touchdown rate was hard at -443 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, but the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.8 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 9°C temperature and winds of 15 knots at 70 degrees, with a crosswind of 14 knots and a headwind of 4 knots. The total landing distance was 1,518 meters, which was 72% of the runway length.
After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area, taking 5 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 320 nautical miles, taking 72 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,488 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at EDXW Westerland Sylt Airport, with a score of 82.6%. The final approach was initiated from the north-west, heading 143.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,334 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft successfully touched down on runway 14, which has a length of 2,115 meters.
The threshold height at 78 feet agl was well above the target, indicating a good approach path. The threshold speed was also satisfactory at 142 knots, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's speed during the approach. The touchdown distance of 423 meters was within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled landing.
However, the touchdown speed of 139 knots was slightly faster than the ideal speed, which may have contributed to a harder touchdown rate of -443 feet per minute (fpm). Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained a stable and aligned approach path.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 9°C and a wind speed of 15 knots from a direction of 70°. The crosswind component was 14 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. These conditions may have presented some challenges for the pilot, but they were successfully managed.
The total landing distance of 1,518 meters was 72% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.8 meters from the centreline, indicating a minor deviation from the ideal alignment. Overall, the landing was successful, but there is room for improvement in terms of touchdown speed and rollout alignment.
