Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 597 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 597 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 184 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 08 at ETNT Wittmundhafen Air Base. The aircraft, a Cessna Skyhawk, accelerated down the runway and lifted off at a speed of 69 kt, requiring a takeoff distance of just 36 meters, which is only 1% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 16 °C and a gentle wind blowing at 1 kt from a direction of 269 °.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airfield, it began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northeast of ETNT Wittmundhafen Air Base. The climb was steep, with the aircraft rising from 931 ft above sea level to 1,211 ft in less than 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. This rapid ascent was followed by a level cruise, which lasted for 6 minutes and covered a distance of 9 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time starting 1 mile southeast of EDXP Harlesiel Airfield. The climb was even more pronounced, with the aircraft rising from 1,625 ft to 2,392 ft in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. Following this climb, the aircraft entered another level cruise, which lasted for 5 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent, starting 1 mile north of Spiekeroog. The descent was steep, with the aircraft dropping from 2,632 ft to 1,252 ft in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 23 at EDWL Langeoog Airport, flying from the northeast and heading 235.0 ° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,237 ft above ground level.
The landing was smooth and controlled, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 56 kt and a distance of 182 meters. The touchdown rate was smooth at -103 fpm, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 16 °C and a gentle wind blowing at 1 kt from a direction of 270 °.
The total landing distance was 391 meters, which is 66% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was well under control throughout the landing process. The total flight distance was 27 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 20 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 7 kg of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna Skyhawk successfully landed at EDWL Langeoog Airport, achieving a score of 99.3%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north east, heading 235.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,237 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot demonstrated excellent control and precision during the final approach, resulting in a smooth touchdown.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway at a speed of 56 knots, which was within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 182 meters was also satisfactory, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent. The touchdown rate of -103 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, suggesting that the pilot had effectively managed the aircraft's energy during the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind and headwind, making the landing even more challenging and impressive. The pilot's ability to navigate the aircraft safely and efficiently in these conditions is a testament to their skill and experience.
The total landing distance of 391 meters was 66% of the runway length, indicating that the pilot had effectively managed the aircraft's energy and had sufficient control over the descent. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control of the aircraft during the critical phase of the landing.
Overall, the Cessna Skyhawk's landing at EDWL Langeoog Airport was a textbook example of precision and control, with the pilot demonstrating exceptional skills and experience. The high score of 99.3% is a testament to the pilot's ability to navigate the aircraft safely and efficiently, even in challenging weather conditions.
