Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,443 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,443 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,092 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by an Airbus A330-900 aircraft. The taxiing process from the parking area to the runway took approximately 9 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The departure roll took place from runway 31L at John F. Kennedy International Airport (KJFK).
During takeoff, the aircraft lifted off the ground at a speed of 184 knots, covering a distance of 256 meters, which was 9% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 9 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 18 knots from a direction of 290 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 17 knots.
After takeoff, the enroute climb began approximately 1 mile southeast of Howard Beach, New York. The aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,034 feet above sea level to 8,893 feet above sea level, an increase of 7,859 feet, in just 4 minutes and covering a distance of 14 nautical miles.
As the aircraft continued its journey, the enroute descent started overhead Hicksville, New York. The descent from 8,934 feet above sea level to 773 feet above sea level, a decrease of 8,160 feet, took only 2 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 19 at Republic Airport (KFRG) was made from the north, heading 185.0 degrees at an altitude of 683 feet above ground level and a distance of 1 nautical mile from the runway threshold. The landing took place on runway 19, which had a length of 1,443 meters.
The landing was characterized by a threshold speed that was well above the target speed of 170 knots. However, the touchdown point was excessively long, using more than 75% of the available runway. The touchdown speed of 147 knots was a little fast, but the touchdown rate of -168 feet per minute was good. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, despite the local weather conditions, which were similar to those at takeoff, with a temperature of 9 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 18 knots from a direction of 290 degrees.
The crosswind component was 17 knots, and the tailwind component was 6 knots. The total landing distance was 1,781 meters, which was 123% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.1 meters from the centerline.
The total flight distance was 27 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 13 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 2,095 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A330-900 aircraft successfully landed on runway 19 at KFRG Republic Airport, but the landing was not without its issues. The final approach was initiated from the north, heading 185.0° at 1 nm and 683 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, but the touchdown point was excessively long, utilizing more than 75% of the available runway. This indicates that the aircraft may have been slightly too far back from the optimal touchdown point, which could be due to a variety of factors such as incorrect flare or a slightly high approach speed.
The threshold speed was well above the target speed of 170 kt, which suggests that the aircraft was descending at a relatively high rate during the final approach. However, the touchdown speed of 147 kt was a little fast, which could have contributed to the long touchdown point. On the positive side, the touchdown rate was good at -168 fpm, indicating that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact of touchdown smoothly.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were not ideal, with a temperature of 9°C and a wind speed of 18 kt at 290°. This resulted in a crosswind of 17 kt and a tailwind of 6 kt, which could have affected the aircraft's stability and control during the landing. Despite these conditions, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway.
The total landing distance was 1,781 m, which is 123% of the runway length. This is a relatively long landing distance, which could be due to the factors mentioned earlier, such as the high approach speed and the long touchdown point. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.1 m from the centreline, which is a minor issue that could be addressed through further training or adjustments to the aircraft's configuration.
Overall, while the landing was not perfect, it was still a safe and successful operation. However, there are areas for improvement, particularly in terms of approach speed and touchdown point management.
