Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,431 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 2,431 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,166 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 21 at Eindhoven Airport (EHEH), taking off with a takeoff distance of 1,330 meters, which was 53% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 157 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 23°C, with a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 190°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 5 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Eindhoven Airport and ascending from 1,099 feet above sea level to 36,566 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,467 feet in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 112 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 3 miles east of Wilnsdorf, Germany, and lasted for 96 minutes, covering a distance of 736 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 5 miles southwest of Strpce, Kosovo, and descending from 36,707 feet above sea level to 1,582 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,125 feet in 31 minutes, covering a distance of 139 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 34 at Thessaloniki Macedonia International Airport (LGTS) was made from the south, heading 346.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,568 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 34, which had a length of 2,431 meters. The threshold height at 120 feet above ground level was excessively over target, and the threshold speed was well above target at 151 knots.
The touchdown point was 694 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 139 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was firm at -338 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.5 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 22°C, with a wind speed of 7 knots from a direction of 250°, resulting in a crosswind of 7 knots and a tailwind of 1 knot.
The total landing distance was 2,419 meters, which was 100% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned by 70.4 meters from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 10 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 995 nautical miles, taking 161 minutes, and the aircraft used 5,835 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LGTS Thessaloniki Macedonia International Airport, but the landing was not without some issues. The final approach was made from the south, heading 346.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,568 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 34, which has a length of 2,431 meters.
However, there were some discrepancies in the landing performance. The threshold height at 120 feet agl was excessively over target, indicating that the aircraft was higher than it should have been at this point. Additionally, the threshold speed was well above the target speed of 151 knots, which is a concern as it may indicate that the aircraft was not properly configured for landing.
The touchdown point was 694 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation. The touchdown speed of 139 knots was a little fast, and the touchdown rate was firm at -338 feet per minute (fpm). This firm touchdown rate may have contributed to the excessive runway rollout alignment, which was found to be 70.4 meters off-centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 22°C and a wind speed of 7 knots from 250°. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the tailwind component was only 1 knot. Despite these favorable weather conditions, the aircraft's landing performance was not ideal.
Overall, while the Boeing 737-800 successfully landed at LGTS Thessaloniki Macedonia International Airport, there were some areas for improvement in terms of landing performance. The excessive threshold height, high threshold speed, and firm touchdown rate all contributed to a landing that was not as smooth as it could have been.
