Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,562 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,562 m of the 2,565 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 510 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 737-900 taxied from the parking area to runway 22R at KEWR, a movement that lasted 10 minutes and covered 1 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 22R, the aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 159 kt and left the ground after traveling 1,507 m, which represented 52 % of the runway length; ambient temperature was 24 °C with a wind of 3 kt from 120° and a 3 kt cross-wind component.
Climb commenced 1 mile east of Elizabeth, New Jersey, where the airplane rose from 986 ft asl to 35,977 ft asl, gaining 34,991 ft in 23 minutes while covering 150 nm.
The first cruise segment began 4 miles north-east of Delmar, Delaware, and persisted for 99 minutes, during which the aircraft traversed 730 nm at level flight.
Descent started 11 miles east of Orchid, Florida, with a reduction from 35,450 ft asl to 6,050 ft asl, a loss of 29,400 ft over 17 minutes and a distance of 99 nm.
A brief cruise followed 4 miles south-east of Hillsboro Beach, Florida, lasting 2 minutes and covering 7 nm.
The next descent began 1 mile south of Sea Ranch Lakes, Florida, dropping from 5,982 ft asl to 3,409 ft asl, a decrease of 2,573 ft in 3 minutes while traveling 13 nm.
A short cruise segment originated 3 miles south-west of Tamarac, Florida, lasting 2 minutes and encompassing 6 nm.
Subsequent descent commenced 3 miles north of Weston, Florida, with the aircraft descending from 2,995 ft asl to 1,915 ft asl, a loss of 1,080 ft in 2 minutes over 5 nm.
The final cruise phase started overhead Weston, Florida, and continued for 3 minutes, covering the remaining 10 nm before the approach.
On final approach to runway 10L at KFLL, the aircraft descended from 1,142 ft agl to 34 ft agl in 87 seconds and was recorded as having scored on the stabilisation gates.
Landing on runway 10L, which is 2,565 m long, occurred with a threshold speed of 145 kt; touchdown was 96 m beyond the touchdown zone at 136 kt, with a vertical speed of minus 178 fpm and very good alignment, while local conditions were 24 °C, wind 2 kt from 340°, a 2 kt cross-wind and a 1 kt tailwind.
Runway rollout proceeded with perfect alignment; the total landing distance measured 1,484 m, representing 58 % of the runway length.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in 4 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 1,028 nm, required 163 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 7,030 kg of fuel.
The approach to runway 10L at KFLL Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport was assessed as stabilised at the 1,000 ft gate, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope, centreline and speed all within limits. The aircraft descended from 1,142 ft agl to 34 ft agl in 87 seconds on a final approach that remained on target throughout.
At threshold the aircraft established a good threshold height and recorded a threshold speed of 145 kt, meeting the required parameters for the flare phase.
Touchdown occurred 96 m beyond the designated touchdown zone with a speed of 136 kt, noted as a little fast, while the vertical rate was good at minus 178 fpm and runway touchdown alignment was very good.
Rollout covered a total landing distance of 1,484 m, representing 58 % of the 2,565 m runway, and runway rollout alignment was perfect; ambient conditions were 24 °C temperature, wind 2 kt from 340°, with a 2 kt crosswind and 1 kt tailwind.
To refine the already high score of 99.5 %, aim to touch down closer to the intended touchdown zone and reduce the touchdown speed slightly to better match the target VREF.
