Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 305 m and 152 m above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
At the 152 m gate: speed 26 kt FAST on the reference speed of 136 kt.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,844 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,844 m of the 3,291 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 988 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Vienna International Airport (LOWW), the Airbus A320 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took approximately 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then rolled onto runway 29, utilizing 1,826 meters, or 52% of the runway, to achieve liftoff at a speed of 157 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 18°C, with a gentle wind of 3 knots at 314°.
As the aircraft climbed away from LOWW, it began its enroute climb, which started approximately 1 mile west of the airport and continued for 20 minutes, covering a distance of 124 nautical miles. The aircraft ascended from an initial altitude of 486 meters above sea level to a cruising altitude of 11,580 meters above sea level, an increase of 11,094.5 meters. Following a 40-minute level cruise, which covered 278 nautical miles, the aircraft began its enroute descent, which started approximately 1 mile west of Beelen Airfield (EDLQ) and continued for 22 minutes, covering 122 nautical miles. The aircraft descended from 11,427 meters above sea level to 914 meters above sea level. After a brief level cruise overhead Beets, the aircraft began its final approach to runway 18C at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (EHAM).
The final approach was conducted from the north, with the aircraft heading 183.0° at 4 nautical miles and 388.6 meters above ground level. The aircraft landed on runway 18C, which had a length of 2,847 meters. The touchdown point was 579 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 150 knots and a smooth touchdown rate of -0.7 meters per second. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.6 meters from the centerline. Following a total landing distance of 1,771 meters, or 62% of the runway, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took approximately 10 minutes and covered 2 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 552 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 1 hour and 6 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,324 kilograms of fuel.
The final approach to runway 18C at EHAM Amsterdam Airport Schiphol from the north was initiated at 4 nm and 388.6 meters above ground level, heading 183.0 degrees. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a threshold height of 22.5 meters above ground level, well above the target. This resulted in a higher than desired approach path angle, which was compensated for by a higher than target threshold speed of 160 knots.
The aircraft touched down 579 meters beyond the touchdown zone, at a speed of 150 knots, which was within the acceptable range. The touchdown rate was smooth, at -0.7 meters per second, indicating a well-controlled descent. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline, by 4.6 meters. This deviation was maintained throughout the rollout phase, with the aircraft deviating from the centreline by 14.1 meters.
The total landing distance was 1,771 meters, accounting for 62% of the runway length. The landing performance was satisfactory, with a score of 81.5%. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and a wind of 4 knots at 252 degrees, contributed to a relatively straightforward landing. The crosswind component was minimal, at 4 knots, while the headwind component was negligible, at 1 knot.
