Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 152 m above the runway. The 305 m gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,887 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,887 m of the 2,993 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,279 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at LIBP Abruzzo Airport, a process that took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 22, with a takeoff distance of 31 meters, which was 1% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 158 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile south west of Sambuceto, Abruzzo, Italy, at an altitude of 319 meters above sea level. The climb continued to an altitude of 10,509 meters above sea level, an increase of 10,189.9 meters, in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 90 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 14 miles south west of Rogoznica, Sibenik-Knin, Croatia, and lasted for 13 minutes, covering a distance of 101 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 2 miles north east of Vitez, Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, from an altitude of 10,673 meters above sea level to 1,230 meters above sea level, a decrease of 9,442.7 meters, in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 102 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started again 2 miles north of Pecinci, Autonomna Pokrajina Vojvodina, Serbia, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent 2 miles north of Simanovci, Autonomna Pokrajina Vojvodina, Serbia, from an altitude of 1,220 meters above sea level to 544 meters above sea level, a decrease of 676.5 meters, in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 12 at LYBE Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport was from the north west, with a heading of 131.0 degrees at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 440.6 meters above ground level. The landing was made on runway 12, which had a length of 2,993 meters. The threshold height was excessively over target, but the threshold speed was good at 135 knots.
The touchdown point was 749 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 131 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was firm at -1.7 meters per second. However, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 180.2 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius.
The total landing distance was 1,692 meters, which was 57% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned by 190.1 meters from the centerline. The aircraft then taxiied to the parking area from the runway, a process that took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 311 nautical miles, which was covered in 61 minutes, and the aircraft used 2,212 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 aircraft has successfully landed at LYBE Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters. The final approach was initiated from the north-west, heading 131.0° at an altitude of 440.6 meters above ground level (agl) and 4 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft maintained a good threshold speed of 135 knots, which is within the acceptable range.
However, the threshold height at 35.2 meters agl was excessively over the target, indicating that the aircraft touched down higher than desired. This could be due to a variety of factors, including incorrect descent rates or inadequate control of the aircraft's altitude. Despite this, the touchdown speed of 131 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -1.7 meters per second was firm, indicating a controlled touchdown.
One of the most significant deviations from the ideal landing parameters was the touchdown point, which was 749 meters beyond the touchdown zone. This indicates that the aircraft touched down too far down the runway, which could increase the risk of overrunning the runway or encountering obstacles. The runway touchdown position was also excessively misaligned by 180.2 meters from the centreline, which could make it more difficult for the aircraft to stop safely.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C. The total landing distance of 1,692 meters was 57% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. However, the runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned by 190.1 meters from the centreline, which could make it more difficult for the aircraft to stop safely.
Overall, while the Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed at LYBE Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, there were some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters. These deviations could be addressed through further training and practice to improve the aircraft's performance and safety.
