Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the full 5,000 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,419 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 09 at San Diego International Airport, also known as KSAN. The aircraft, a Seastar, took off with a takeoff distance of 1,443 feet, which is 21% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 86 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 61 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead San Diego. The aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,098 feet above sea level to 168 feet above sea level, an increase of 930 feet in just 3 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles.
The final approach to landing was made on the San Diego Static Carrier, CVN76, from an altitude of 100 feet above ground level. The aircraft then began its descent, reducing its altitude from 47 feet above ground level to 0 feet above ground level in just 16 seconds. The touchdown speed was 77 knots, which was considered good, and the touchdown rate was also good at -160 feet per minute.
The touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 59 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 2 knots from 285 degrees.
After touchdown, the aircraft began its landing rollout, covering a distance of 739 feet. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took just 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 5 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 5 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 1,395 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Seastar aircraft has successfully landed on the San Diego Static Carrier - CVN76, achieving a score of 71.8%. The final approach to landing was conducted from 1 nautical mile away, at an altitude of 100 feet above ground level (agl). As the aircraft approached the touchdown point, it descended from 47 feet agl to 0 feet agl in a span of 16 seconds, demonstrating a controlled and steady rate of descent.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was recorded at 77 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown rate of -160 feet per minute (fpm) was also deemed satisfactory, indicating a smooth and controlled landing. However, the touchdown point was noted to be very long, utilizing more than 50% of the available runway. This may be a concern for future landings, as it could potentially impact the aircraft's ability to stop safely within the designated runway length.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 285°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the tailwind component was 2 knots. These conditions likely contributed to the successful landing, as they did not pose a significant challenge to the aircraft's control or stability.
During the landing rollout, the aircraft maintained an altitude of 0 feet above sea level (asl) and traveled a distance of 739 feet. This distance is relatively long, suggesting that the aircraft may have taken some time to come to a complete stop after touchdown. Nevertheless, the landing was ultimately successful, and the aircraft was able to come to a stop within the designated runway area.
