Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 533 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 533 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 166 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Edgley Optica aircraft departed from runway 12 at EGOM RAF Spadeadam, a military airfield in Cumbria, England. The takeoff roll began on the 406-meter mark, which accounted for 76% of the runway's total length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 67 knots, reaching the necessary altitude to begin its ascent.
As the aircraft climbed, it started from a point 1 mile southeast of the airfield, rising from an altitude of 1,787 feet above sea level to 2,027 feet in just 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. This rapid ascent allowed the aircraft to reach a stable cruising altitude, where it remained for 12 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles.
After leveling off, the aircraft began its final approach to runway 12, coming in from the northwest at a heading of 118.0 degrees and an altitude of 345 feet above ground level, 1 nautical mile from the runway. The landing was executed on the 533-meter runway, with a good threshold height and a touchdown distance of 165 meters, which was 53% of the runway's total length.
The touchdown speed was slightly excessive at 59 knots, but the touchdown rate was perfect at -43 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was also very good, indicating a smooth and controlled landing. The aircraft used 9 kilograms of fuel for the entire flight, which lasted 19 minutes and covered a total distance of 6 nautical miles.
The Edgley Optica successfully landed at RAF Spadeadam's runway 12, achieving a score of 90.2%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north-west, heading 118.0° at 1 nautical mile and 345 feet above ground level. The landing was executed on a runway with a length of 533 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, but the threshold speed was excessively high at 68 knots. This indicates that the pilot may have been able to slow down more efficiently before touchdown. The touchdown distance was good, measuring 165 meters, which is a reasonable distance for a landing on a runway of this length.
However, the touchdown speed was excessively fast at 59 knots. This suggests that the pilot may have been able to flare the aircraft more effectively to reduce the touchdown speed. The touchdown rate was perfect, at -43 feet per minute, which is a good indication of a controlled descent.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained a stable and aligned approach to the runway. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a light wind of 1 knot at 94°. There was no crosswind or headwind to contend with.
The total landing distance was 281 meters, which is 53% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the pilot executed a good landing. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there are some areas for improvement, particularly in terms of slowing down before touchdown and reducing the touchdown speed.
