Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: gear still up, no landing flap set, off the runway's 3° glideslope, off the centreline and speed above the reference speed.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed, off the runway's 3° glideslope and off the centreline.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,204 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 445 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the OV-10 Bronco taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Carmacks Airport, a process that took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. Departure roll from runway 10 at CEX4 Carmacks Airport was successful, with a takeoff distance of 694 meters, which accounted for 37% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 96 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 16°C, with a wind speed of 3 knots at 270°. The crosswind was minimal at 1 knot, while the tailwind was 3 knots. As the aircraft took to the skies, it began its enroute climb, starting overhead Carmacks Airport and rising from 2,011 feet above sea level to 2,400 feet, an increase of 390 feet in just 1 minute, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase began 1 mile southwest of Carmacks Airport and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another enroute climb phase, this time from 10 miles south of Carmacks Airport, where it rose from 2,624 feet to 3,088 feet, an increase of 464 feet in 2 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase resumed 16 miles south of Carmacks Airport and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another enroute climb phase, this time from 11 miles north of Braeburn Airport, where it rose from 3,520 feet to 4,817 feet, an increase of 1,298 feet in 2 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase resumed 5 miles north of Braeburn Airport and lasted for 9 minutes, covering a distance of 37 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another enroute climb phase, this time from 13 miles north of Whitehorse / Cousins Airport, where it rose from 4,086 feet to 4,638 feet, an increase of 552 feet in 2 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent, starting 6 miles north of Whitehorse / Cousins Airport and descending from 4,575 feet to 4,052 feet, a decrease of 523 feet in 2 minutes, covering 9 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 14R at Whitehorse / Erik Nielsen International Airport was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 168.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,752 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 14R was successful, with a touchdown distance of 425 meters, which was good. However, the touchdown speed of 90 knots was a little fast, and the touchdown rate was firm at -320 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.5 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C, with a wind speed of 3 knots at 270°. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the tailwind was 1 knot.
The total landing distance was 856 meters, which accounted for 39% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 11.2 meters from the centreline. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 94 nautical miles, taking 27 minutes, and the aircraft used 159 kilograms of fuel.
The OV-10 Bronco aircraft successfully landed at CYXY Whitehorse / Erik Nielsen International Airport, achieving an overall score of 80.5%. The final approach to runway 14R was initiated from the north, heading 168.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,752 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway at a speed of 90 kt, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown distance of 425 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -320 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting a relatively steep descent.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.5 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to factors such as wind or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 3 kt at 270°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 kt, while the tailwind component was 1 kt.
The total landing distance of 856 meters was 39% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 11.2 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the same factors that caused the initial touchdown position to be off-center.
Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the OV-10 Bronco aircraft demonstrated a good level of control and stability during the final approach and landing phases. However, there is room for improvement in terms of touchdown speed and runway alignment.
