Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 152 m above the runway. The 305 m gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,341 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,341 m of the 3,669 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,183 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at the Albuquerque International Sunport, taking approximately 8 minutes to cover a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 26, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 152 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 3 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 0 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead the Albuquerque International Sunport. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,921 meters above sea level to 11,692 meters above sea level, an increase of 9,771.7 meters, in 18 minutes and covering a distance of 104 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase began 6 miles east of the Jicarilla Apache Nation Dulce, and lasted for 14 minutes, covering a distance of 101 nautical miles.
The enroute descent phase started 6 miles southwest of Poncha Springs, Colorado, and took the aircraft from an altitude of 11,885 meters above sea level to 2,211 meters above sea level, a decrease of 9,673.5 meters, in 25 minutes and covering a distance of 114 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 17R at the Denver International Airport was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 181.0 degrees at an altitude of 557.1 meters above ground level and 3 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing took place on runway 17R, which had a length of 3,669 meters. The threshold height was significantly above the target, and the threshold speed was also well above the target at 164 knots. The touchdown point was 768 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 144 knots. However, the touchdown rate was excellent at -0.3 meters per second, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 0 knots. The total landing distance was 2,261 meters, which was 62% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 18.2 meters from the centerline. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 327 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 2,729 minutes. The aircraft used a total of -1,881 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed on runway 17R at KDEN Denver International Airport, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the north, heading 181.0° at 3 nautical miles and 557.1 meters above ground level (agl). The landing was executed with a runway length of 3,669 meters, which provided a sufficient margin for the aircraft to touch down safely.
However, the threshold height at 25.8 meters agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft was higher than expected when it reached the runway threshold. This could be attributed to a number of factors, including the aircraft's descent rate or the pilot's decision to extend the landing. The threshold speed was also well above the target at 164 knots, which may have been due to the aircraft's high approach speed or the pilots' decision to maintain a higher speed to ensure a safe landing.
The touchdown point was 768 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the ideal landing point. This could be attributed to a number of factors, including the aircraft's speed, descent rate, or the pilots' decision to extend the landing. The touchdown speed at 144 knots was a little fast, which may have contributed to the aircraft's distance from the touchdown zone.
Despite these deviations, the touchdown rate was excellent at -0.3 meters per second, indicating that the aircraft touched down smoothly and safely. The runway touchdown alignment was also perfect, which is a critical factor in ensuring a safe landing. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 17°C and no wind, which made the landing conditions ideal.
The total landing distance was 2,261 meters, which is 62% of the runway length. This is a relatively long landing distance, but it is not uncommon for aircraft to land beyond the touchdown zone. The runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 18.2 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the aircraft's speed or the pilots' decision to extend the landing. Overall, the landing was successful, but it highlights the importance of precise landing techniques and adherence to standard operating procedures.
