Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,373 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 322 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight on the RJ85 began with a 5-minute taxi from the parking area to the runway at LFRD Dinard-Pleurtuit-Saint-Malo Airport. The departure roll took place on runway 35, with a takeoff distance of 920m, covering 42% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 139 knots. The local weather at the time of departure was 21°C with a wind of 21 knots at 330°, resulting in a crosswind of 7 knots and a headwind of 20 knots.
The enroute climb started over the airport and went from 1,200 feet above sea level to 4,940 feet, a total increase of 3,739 feet over 2 minutes and covering 3 nautical miles. The level cruise began shortly after, lasting 2 minutes covering less than 1 nautical mile before another climb started 1 mile north of Saint-Lunaire. This climb took the aircraft from 5,245 feet to 31,426 feet, a total increase of 26,181 feet over 23 minutes and covering 133 nautical miles.
After another 30-minute level cruise, the descent began 2 miles northwest of Nozieres. The aircraft descended from 32,117 feet to 1,836 feet, a decrease of 30,281 feet over 22 minutes and covering 106 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 31R at LFML Marseille Provence Airport from the southeast took the aircraft to a landing at 1,803 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 31R at LFML Marseille Provence Airport was successful, with a good touchdown distance of 322 meters at a speed of 109 knots and a firm touchdown rate of -339 feet per minute. The total landing distance was 859 meters, covering 25% of the runway, with a very good runway rollout alignment.
After landing, the aircraft taxied back to the parking area, covering less than 1 nautical mile in 5 minutes. The total flight distance was 493 nautical miles, taking a total of 93 minutes and consuming 3,073 kilograms of fuel.
Overall, this aircraft landing scored an impressive 97.8%, showcasing exemplary performance in several key areas.
During the Approach Phase, the pilot demonstrated excellent control and precision in achieving glideslope alignment, which is critical for a smooth landing. The threshold speed of 116 kt was also within the optimal range, indicating a well-executed approach to the runway.
Moving on to the Landing Phase, the pilot maintained good threshold height, ensuring a safe descent towards the runway. Additionally, the landing flare was very good, indicating a smooth transition from descent to touchdown.
In the Touchdown Phase, although the touchdown rate was firm at -339 ft/m, the touchdown speed of 109 kt and distance of 322 m were both within acceptable limits. Furthermore, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, signaling a precise touchdown on the designated landing area.
Overall, this aircraft landing demonstrates a high level of skill and proficiency on the part of the pilot. By consistently maintaining control and executing key maneuvers effectively, the pilot achieved an outstanding landing score of 97.8%. Keep up the great work and continue striving for excellence in all phases of flight.
