Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,148 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,316 ft short of the threshold. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 taxied from the parking area to runway 20C at Singapore Changi Airport (WSSS) in eight minutes, covering a distance of two nautical miles.
During the departure roll on runway 20C, the aircraft used 8,378 ft of runway, representing 64 % of the available length, and lifted off at 157 kt. Ambient conditions were a temperature of 89 °F, wind from 110° at 12 kt, a cross-wind component of 12 kt and a tail-wind component of 1 kt.
Climb commenced two miles south-west of WSAC Changi Air Base (East) in Singapore, with the airplane accelerating from 933 ft asl to 35,006 ft asl, an altitude gain of 34,072 ft achieved in 23 minutes while covering 156 nm.
The first cruise segment began 35 nm north-east of Tioman Airport (WMBT) and continued for 142 minutes, during which the aircraft flew 1,279 nm at level altitude.
Descent started 32 nm south of Sok Kwu Wan, reducing altitude from 35,000 ft asl to 7,528 ft asl, a loss of 27,472 ft in 15 minutes over a distance of 101 nm.
A short cruise followed, originating five miles south-west of Licheng, lasting seven minutes and spanning 32 nm.
The next descent began five miles south-east of Guangzhou, dropping from 6,116 ft asl to 5,004 ft asl, a decrease of 1,112 ft in three minutes while covering 11 nm.
A further cruise segment started four miles east of Foshan, lasting two minutes and covering four nautical miles.
Subsequent descent commenced one mile south-west of Guangzhou, bringing the aircraft from 4,951 ft asl to 1,207 ft asl, a loss of 3,744 ft in five minutes across 13 nm.
Final approach to runway 02R at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (ZGGG) was executed from the south, on a heading of 13.0°, at four nautical miles and 1,149 ft agl. Weather at the time was 84 °F with wind from 337° at 5 kt, a cross-wind component of 3 kt and a head-wind component of 4 kt.
Touchdown occurred before the runway threshold at a speed of 142 kt; the vertical speed was smooth at minus 142 fpm. The touchdown point was offset by 1,310 ft from the centreline, and the total landing distance recorded was 3,278 ft, equal to 32 % of the runway length.
During rollout the aircraft remained misaligned, with the centreline deviation measured at 1,313 ft.
The airplane taxied from the runway to the parking area in four minutes, traveling less than one nautical mile.
Overall, the flight covered 1,606 nm, required 208 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 17,222 lb of fuel.
The final approach to runway 19 at KSGU was flown from the north on a heading of 201.0° at 4 nm and 920 ft agl; the approach was assessed as unstable at the 1,000 ft gate because the flaps were not set.
At the threshold the aircraft was 85 ft agl, a height that was significantly above the target, while the threshold speed of 92 kt was recorded as good.
Touchdown occurred 294 m beyond the touchdown zone with a speed of 89 kt, both judged good, and the vertical rate was smooth at minus 114 fpm; the touchdown point was laterally offset 7.8 m from the centreline and the total landing distance measured 1,479 m, representing 52 % of the 2,825 m runway.
During rollout the aircraft remained slightly off centreline, with a lateral deviation of 7.9 m.
To improve future performance, set the appropriate flap configuration before reaching the 1,000 ft gate to obtain a stabilized approach, and concentrate on maintaining centreline alignment through touchdown and rollout to reduce lateral deviation.
