Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,975 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 476 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 26 at NCRG Rarotonga International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,101 meters, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 158 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 27 degrees Celsius and winds of 3 knots at 160 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the tailwind was 1 knot. After departing the airport, the enroute climb started 1 mile west of NCRG Rarotonga International Airport Avarua, where the aircraft climbed from 1,154 feet above sea level to 38,244 feet above sea level, an increase of 37,090 feet in 19 minutes and covering 116 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 37 miles southwest of NCMK Mauke Airport Mauke Island and lasted 47 minutes, covering 375 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent from a latitude of -18.5527094 and a longitude of -151.5372156, descending from 37,764 feet above sea level to 1,401 feet above sea level, a decrease of 36,363 feet in 23 minutes and covering 121 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 04 at NTAA Faa'a International Airport was made from the southwest, heading 55.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,385 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 04 was successful, with the threshold height being well above the target and the threshold speed being good at 137 knots. However, the touchdown point was 61 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 131 knots, resulting in a hard touchdown rate of -482 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius and winds of 5 knots at 80 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the headwind was 4 knots. The total landing distance was 1,238 meters, which accounted for 42% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 618 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 99 minutes. The aircraft used 4,195 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at NTAA Faa'a International Airport, with a final approach score of 89.0%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the southwest, heading 55.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,385 feet above ground level (agl).
The landing was executed on runway 04, which has a length of 2,975 meters. The threshold height at 72 feet agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft was slightly higher than desired when reaching the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed of 137 knots was within the acceptable range, demonstrating good control and management of the aircraft's descent.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 61 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 131 knots was slightly faster than the desired speed, contributing to a harder touchdown rate of -482 feet per minute (fpm). Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 26°C and a gentle wind of 5 knots at 80°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots, providing a relatively stable and calm environment for the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,238 meters was 42% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled and stable during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft demonstrating good control and management throughout the approach and touchdown phases. However, there is room for improvement in terms of touchdown speed and rate, which can be addressed through further training and practice.
