Fixing the bounce
Fast at the threshold, normal flare, and the runway seems to refuse the aircraft. The instinctive fix - pushing it on - causes the next one. A fast aircraft forced onto the runway touches nosewheel-first or nearly so. The tell is a touchdown that feels soft followed by a bounce that steepens. Pilots fix the bounce recovery; the cause was the 10 knots at the threshold.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,552 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,552 m of the 3,671 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 433 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A320-ceo taxied from the parking apron to runway 08 at Rarotonga International Airport, covering roughly 1 nm in a period of 4 minutes.
During the departure roll on runway 08, the aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 163 kt and became airborne after traveling 1 599 m, which represented 72 % of the available runway. Ambient conditions were a temperature of 27 °C with a wind of 9 kt from 030°, providing a 4 kt headwind component and an 8 kt cross-wind component.
The initial climb commenced overhead Avarua, rising from 931 ft asl to 26 008 ft asl - an altitude gain of 25 077 ft - in 14 minutes while covering 80 nm.
A subsequent climb segment began at latitude -31.8025368, longitude -174.946781, climbing from 26 000 ft asl to 28 030 ft asl, an increase of 2 030 ft achieved in 3 minutes over a distance of 20 nm.
The first cruise phase started 69 miles southwest of Rarotonga International Airport and persisted for 150 minutes, during which the aircraft flew 961 nm at level altitude.
A second cruise leg originated at latitude -32.0012758, longitude -175.2889647, lasting 70 minutes and covering an additional 449 nm.
Descent began 71 miles northeast of Great Mercury Airport, with the aircraft descending from 27 997 ft asl to 1 317 ft asl - a loss of 26 680 ft - in 24 minutes while traversing 120 nm.
For the final approach, the aircraft aligned with runway 23L at Auckland International Airport from the east, maintaining a heading of 251.0° at 4 nm and 1 289 ft agl.
Landing on runway 23L, which is 3 671 m long, was executed with a threshold speed of 137 kt. Touchdown occurred 432 m down the runway at 133 kt, with a vertical speed of minus 280 fpm and a very good alignment. The total landing distance recorded was 1 469 m, representing 40 % of the runway. Local weather at the time was 15 °C with a wind of 13 kt from 319°, giving a 4 kt headwind and a 12 kt cross-wind component.
Runway rollout alignment was reported as very good as the aircraft decelerated and exited the runway.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in 5 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 1 639 nm, required 276 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 11 308 kg of fuel.
The Airbus A320ceo commenced final approach to runway 23L at NZAA Auckland International Airport from the east, on a heading of 251.0 ° at 4 nm and 1,289 ft agl. The approach was assessed as stabilised at the 1,000 ft gate, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope and centreline all within limits. Local weather was 15 °C with wind 13 kt at 319 °, providing a 12 kt crosswind and a 4 kt headwind.
Threshold height was good and threshold speed was good at 137 kt. The aircraft flared and touched down 432 m down the runway; touchdown speed was 133 kt, noted as a little fast, and touchdown rate was fair at minus 280 fpm. Runway touchdown alignment was very good.
Total landing distance measured 1,469 m, representing 40 % of the 3,671 m runway, and the touchdown point remained within the expected aim zone. The overall landing score was 96.2%.
Runway rollout alignment was very good.
Reduce touchdown speed toward the target VREF to eliminate the slight excess over 133 kt, and aim for a smoother vertical profile to improve the minus 280 fpm rate. Maintaining these adjustments will help sustain the high overall score.
