Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 300 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed, off the runway's 3° glideslope, off the centreline and speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 918 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 918 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 327 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was conducted in an OV-10 Bronco aircraft, departing from KPDT Eastern Oregon Regional Airport at Pendleton. The taxiing process from the parking area to the runway took approximately 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll from runway 29 was successful, with a takeoff distance of 732 meters, which accounted for 47% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 103 knots.
The initial climb started 1 mile northwest of the airport, with the aircraft ascending from 2,140 feet above sea level to 2,450 feet, an increase of 310 feet in 1 minute, covering 2 nautical miles. The enroute climb continued at various points, including 6 miles southeast of Echo, 10 miles northeast of Wasco, and 1 mile east of Dallesport, with the aircraft reaching altitudes of up to 1,533 feet above sea level.
The flight also involved several level cruise segments, including a 12-minute cruise at 2 miles east of Echo, covering 37 nautical miles, and a 3-minute cruise at 2 miles north of Chenoweth, covering 11 nautical miles. The enroute descent started at various points, including 1 mile west of Pendleton, 7 miles southwest of WA00 Mercer Ranch Airport, and 6 miles northeast of 10RU DOCILF Rufus Rufus, with the aircraft descending to altitudes as low as 380 feet above sea level.
The right-hand pattern entry was successful, with the aircraft completing the turn in 28 seconds and covering 1 nautical mile. The pattern downwind turn was completed in 2 nautical miles, with an angle to the runway of 122.8 degrees. The final approach to runway 25 at 4S2 Ken Jernstedt Airfield was conducted from the east, with the aircraft landing at a speed of 95 knots and a touchdown distance of 326 meters.
The landing was considered good, with a touchdown rate of -80 feet per minute and a runway touchdown position that was slightly misaligned by 3.2 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance was 506 meters, which accounted for 55% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the taxiing process from the runway to the parking area took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 133 nautical miles, taking approximately 48 minutes, and the aircraft used 306 kilograms of fuel. The local weather conditions during the flight included a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 6 knots at 270 degrees, with a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 5 knots.
The OV-10 Bronco aircraft successfully landed at 4S2 Ken Jernstedt Airfield, achieving a high score of 98.6%. The final approach to runway 25 was conducted from the east, with the aircraft heading 271.0° at a distance of 1 nautical mile and an altitude of 462 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with a touchdown distance of 326 meters. However, the touchdown speed of 95 knots was slightly higher than ideal, indicating that the pilot may have been able to flare the aircraft more effectively to reduce the touchdown speed. The touchdown rate of -80 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, demonstrating good control and precision during the landing.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 3.2 meters, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's approach path or a minor error in the pilot's alignment during the final stages of the approach. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a gentle headwind of 6 knots from 270°.
The total landing distance of 506 meters was 55% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop safely within a reasonable distance. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, demonstrating good control and precision during the post-landing phase. Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good flying skills and control.
