Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,812 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 302 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 26 at Ben Gurion International Airport (LLBG) in Israel. The takeoff distance was 1,651 meters, which accounted for 54% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 171 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 17°C and winds of 5 knots at 150°. The crosswind was 5 knots, while the tailwind was 2 knots. The enroute climb started overhead Hemed in the Central District of Israel, where the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,143 feet above sea level to 25,464 feet above sea level, an increase of 24,321 feet in 13 minutes and covering a distance of 57 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 34 miles west of the FC05 Haifa Static Carrier - CVN78 in the Northern District of Israel and lasted for 5 minutes, covering a distance of 39 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its descent 48 miles northwest of the FC05 Haifa Static Carrier, descending from 25,866 feet above sea level to 2,627 feet above sea level, a decrease of 23,239 feet in 14 minutes and covering a distance of 81 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed 8 miles southeast of Larnaca International Airport (LCLK) in Cyprus and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 10 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent 3 miles west of Xylofagou in Cyprus, descending from 2,077 feet above sea level to 1,200 feet above sea level, a decrease of 878 feet in 2 minutes and covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 22 at LCLK Larnaca International Airport was from the northeast, with a heading of 225.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,181 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 22 was successful, with a runway length of 2,812 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 141 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 303 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 138 knots. The touchdown rate was hard at -474 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local weather conditions were a temperature of 16°C and winds of 8 knots at 300°, with a crosswind of 8 knots and a headwind of 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,024 meters, which accounted for 36% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing to the parking from the runway took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 203 nautical miles, and the flight used 2,455 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at Larnaca International Airport (LCLK) on runway 22, achieving a score of 97.3%. The final approach was initiated from the north-east, heading 225.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,181 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 141 knots, which was slightly above the target threshold speed. However, the touchdown distance of 303 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 138 knots was a little fast, but this did not significantly impact the overall performance of the landing.
The aircraft's rate of descent was hard, at -474 feet per minute (fpm), which may have contributed to the slightly fast touchdown speed. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 8 knots from 300°. This resulted in a crosswind of 8 knots and a headwind of 2 knots, which did not significantly impact the landing performance.
The total landing distance of 1,024 meters was 36% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating that the aircraft was well-controlled during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score of 97.3%. The slight deviations from the target speeds and rates of descent did not significantly impact the overall performance of the landing, and the aircraft was able to stop safely within the designated runway area.
