Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,039 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 447 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 10R at Dublin Airport (EIDW), with a takeoff distance of 1,199 meters, which accounted for 46% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 158 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 11 knots at a direction of 70 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 10 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, which started overhead Dublin Airport and took the aircraft up to a height of 35,912 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,684 feet in 21 minutes, covering a distance of 132 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 52 minutes and covered a distance of 388 nautical miles. This phase began 14 miles northwest of Lundy Island Airfield (EGZV) in Devon, England. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started overhead Gente in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France, and took the aircraft down to a height of 1,499 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,669 feet in 31 minutes, covering a distance of 142 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 09 at Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne Airport (LFBZ) was made from the west, with a heading of 89.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,252 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 09, which had a length of 2,039 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 136 knots. However, the touchdown speed was a little fast at 129 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -224 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.9 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 8 knots at a direction of 330 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 7 knots and a tailwind of 4 knots. The total landing distance was 1,353 meters, which accounted for 66% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The final phase of the flight involved taxiing to the parking from the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 671 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 122 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 4,290 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LFBZ Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne Airport, with a final approach score of 98.5%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the west, heading 89.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,252 feet above ground level.
The landing was executed on runway 09, which has a length of 2,039 meters. The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. The threshold speed of 136 knots was also within the acceptable range, suggesting that the pilot had maintained control and was on track for a smooth landing.
However, there were a few areas for improvement. The touchdown speed of 129 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have resulted in a slightly longer landing distance. Additionally, the touchdown rate of -224 feet per minute was only fair, indicating that the aircraft may have touched down with a bit too much force.
The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned, being 4.9 meters off-centerline. This may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's heading or a miscalculation of the approach path. Despite this, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot had maintained control and was able to smoothly bring the aircraft to a stop.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 13°C and winds of 8 knots from 330°. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the tailwind component was 4 knots. The total landing distance was 1,353 meters, which was 66% of the runway length. Overall, the landing was successful, but there were a few areas for improvement that the pilot could work on in the future.
