Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 500 ft gate: speed below the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,624 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 225 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The Airbus A320 then departed from runway 17R at SBSP Congonhas Airport in São Paulo, Brazil. The takeoff distance was 977 meters, which accounted for 56% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 139 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 11 knots from a direction of 160 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 11 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile southeast of SBSP Congonhas Airport and reaching an altitude of 22,730 feet above sea level. The climb was a significant one, with the aircraft increasing its altitude by 19,079 feet in just 10 minutes, covering a distance of 27 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 5 miles north of Pirapora do Bom Jesus and lasted for 9 minutes. During this time, the aircraft covered a distance of 55 nautical miles. The cruise phase was followed by a descent, which began 2 miles south of Santa Gertrudes and saw the aircraft decrease its altitude by 18,156 feet in 12 minutes, covering a distance of 55 nautical miles. The descent phase was then followed by another level cruise phase, which started 7 miles north of SDOX Fazenda Pixoxó Airport and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 9 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 20 at SDSC Mário Pereira Lopes–São Carlos Airport was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 181.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,314 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 127 knots and a touchdown distance of 227 meters. The touchdown rate was firm at -372 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.1 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 23 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 79 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 0 knots. The total landing distance was 1,006 meters, which accounted for 62% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft was able to taxi to the parking area in just 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
Overall, the flight was a successful one, with the aircraft covering a total distance of 152 nautical miles in 52 minutes and using 1,734 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at SDSC Mário Pereira Lopes–São Carlos Airport, achieving a high score of 97.0%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north, heading 181.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,314 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a steady course, and the aircraft touched down on runway 20, which has a length of 1,624 meters.
The landing was characterized by a good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct altitude when it reached the runway threshold. The threshold speed of 132 knots was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's speed during the final approach. The touchdown distance of 227 meters was also satisfactory, and the touchdown speed of 127 knots was within the recommended limits.
The touchdown rate of -372 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, indicating that the aircraft touched down with a controlled descent. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.1 meters from the centerline, which may require some adjustments to the pilot's approach technique.
The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 23°C and a wind speed of 2 knots at 79°. The crosswind component was minimal, and there was no headwind, which made the landing conditions relatively easy. The total landing distance of 1,006 meters was 62% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase and was able to align the aircraft with the centerline of the runway. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good skills and judgment in controlling the aircraft during the final approach and landing phases.
