Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 11,795 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 335 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by a Boeing 777-300 aircraft. The aircraft began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 32 at Zürich Airport (LSZH), with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 174 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 54°F and a wind speed of 18 knots from a direction of 299°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 17 knots. The aircraft's takeoff distance was 3,205 feet, which represented 31% of the runway length.
As the aircraft climbed to cruising altitude, it passed over several notable locations, including Oberglatt in Switzerland, Stanzach in Austria, and Cave del Predil in Italy. The enroute climb phase saw the aircraft ascend from 2,461 feet above sea level to 34,276 feet, an increase of 31,815 feet in just 13 minutes. The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 18 minutes and covered a distance of 136 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued to climb and level off at various points during the flight, including a brief climb phase from 34,630 feet to 36,659 feet, and a longer level cruise phase that lasted for 223 minutes and covered a distance of 1,901 nautical miles. The aircraft also experienced a final climb phase from 37,915 feet to 39,911 feet, before beginning its descent towards Dubai International Airport.
The descent phase saw the aircraft descend from 40,155 feet above sea level to 1,342 feet, a decrease of 38,813 feet in 34 minutes. The final approach to runway 30L at Dubai International Airport was made from the south-east, with the aircraft heading 301.0° at an altitude of 1,304 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 30L was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 136 knots and a distance of 341 feet. The touchdown rate was fair at -259 feet per minute, although the touchdown speed was a little fast. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 12 feet.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 81°F and a wind speed of 7 knots from a direction of 220°. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the headwind component was 1 knot. The total landing distance was 3,989 feet, which represented 34% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft was able to taxi to the parking area in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
Overall, the flight was a successful one, with the aircraft covering a total distance of 2,632 nautical miles in 320 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 89,446 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at Dubai International Airport (OMDB) on runway 30L, achieving a score of 99.5%. The final approach was conducted from the southeast, heading 301.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,304 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, which has a length of 11,795 feet, with a good threshold height.
The threshold speed was within the acceptable range at 138 knots, indicating a smooth and controlled approach. However, the touchdown speed of 136 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have contributed to a fair touchdown rate of -259 feet per minute (fpm). The touchdown distance of 341 feet was also within the acceptable range.
Despite the good overall performance, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 12 feet from the centreline. This may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the final approach. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 81°F and a wind speed of 7 knots from 220°. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the headwind component was 1 knot.
The total landing distance of 3,989 feet was 34% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively, allowing for a controlled deceleration. Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft coming to a stop in a safe and controlled manner.
