Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,542 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,542 m of the 2,738 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 943 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 18L at KAUS Austin Bergstrom International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,723 meters, which accounted for 63% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 156 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 14 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 6 knots at 109 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile north of the 02XS Seidel Ranch Airport in Austin, Texas. The climb took 24 minutes and covered a distance of 170 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,476 feet above sea level to 35,236 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,760 feet. The enroute level cruise then began 1 mile west of the 8TA8 Bufords Field Huntington in Texas and lasted for 46 minutes, covering a distance of 422 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 6 miles north of Marbury, Alabama, and took 27 minutes to descend from 35,105 feet above sea level to 2,186 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,919 feet. The descent covered a distance of 118 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 26R at KATL Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport was made from the east, heading 270.0 degrees, at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,159 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 26R was successful, with a touchdown point 520 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 144 knots, which was a little fast, but the touchdown rate was fair at -270 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 3 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 5 knots at 320 degrees.
The total landing distance was 1,455 meters, which accounted for 53% of the runway. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 65 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 718 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 105 minutes. The aircraft used a total of -5,166 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (KATL) on runway 26R. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 270.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,159 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold speed of 146 knots, which is within the acceptable range for a safe landing.
However, the threshold height at 86 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal approach path. The touchdown point was located 520 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively long distance. The touchdown speed of 144 knots was a little fast, suggesting that the pilot may have applied a bit too much reverse thrust or failed to maintain a steady descent rate.
The touchdown rate of -270 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, indicating a moderate rate of descent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, which is a critical factor in ensuring a safe and stable landing. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 3°C, a wind speed of 5 knots at 320°, and a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 3 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,455 meters was 53% of the runway length, which is a relatively long distance. Nevertheless, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was satisfactory, but there is room for improvement in terms of threshold height and touchdown speed.
