Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,375 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 167 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a CRJ900, then departed from runway 03L at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (KDTW). The takeoff distance was 1,485 meters, which accounted for 57% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 141 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 5 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 8 knots at a direction of 50 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 7 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 2 miles west of Taylor, Michigan, and ascended from an altitude of 1,627 feet above sea level to 33,001 feet above sea level, an increase of 31,374 feet, in 14 minutes and covering a distance of 173 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 2 miles northeast of Bemus Point, New York, and lasted for 7 minutes, covering a distance of 202 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 4 miles southeast of Croghan, New York, and descended from 33,015 feet above sea level to 1,696 feet above sea level, a decrease of 31,318 feet, in 10 minutes and covering a distance of 103 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 15 at Burlington International Airport (KBTV) was made from the northwest, with a heading of 131.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,355 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 15, which had a length of 2,375 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 146 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 169 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 143 knots. The touchdown rate was hard at -439 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect after the landing. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -3 degrees Celsius.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 486 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 40 minutes. The aircraft used 2,267 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The CRJ900 aircraft successfully landed at KBTV Burlington International Airport, achieving a score of 97.7%. The final approach was conducted from the northwest, heading 131.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,355 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was well-executed, with a good threshold height and a slightly above-target threshold speed of 146 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's performance was satisfactory, with a touchdown distance of 169 meters, which was within acceptable limits. However, the touchdown speed of 143 knots was slightly faster than the target speed, indicating a potential for a harder landing. The touchdown rate of -439 feet per minute (fpm) was indeed hard, which may have contributed to the slightly faster touchdown speed.
Despite the slightly faster touchdown speed, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -3°C, which may have affected the aircraft's performance.
The total landing distance of 1,058 meters was 45% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the runway length of 2,375 meters. This suggests that the aircraft was able to stop quickly and efficiently after touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled during the rollout phase.
Overall, the CRJ900 aircraft's landing performance at KBTV Burlington International Airport was satisfactory, with a score of 97.7%. While there were some minor issues with the touchdown speed and rate, the aircraft's overall performance was well-executed, and the landing was safe and controlled.
