Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: off the centreline.
At the 500 ft gate: off the centreline.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,961 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,961 m of the 2,329 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 430 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by a Boeing 777-300 aircraft. The aircraft began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 24R at RJBB Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan. The takeoff distance was 2,172 meters, which accounted for 54% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 182 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 225 degrees. The crosswind component was negligible, while the headwind component was 3 knots. As the aircraft climbed to its initial altitude, it began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile west of RJBB Kansai International Airport. The climb took 19 minutes and covered a distance of 124 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,019 feet above sea level to 31,000 feet.
The enroute level cruise phase began 3 miles northeast of Mizunami, Japan, and lasted for 102 minutes, covering a distance of 851 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 31,002 feet to 32,885 feet, an increase of 1,883 feet, in just 2 minutes and covering 14 nautical miles. The next level cruise phase started at a location with coordinates 43.4703739° N and 152.2789603° E, and lasted for 176 minutes, covering a distance of 1,463 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued its journey with another climb, this time from 33,440 feet to 34,980 feet, an increase of 1,539 feet, in just 2 minutes and covering 14 nautical miles. The next level cruise phase started at a location with coordinates 57.0297059° N and -175.0213905° E, and lasted for 213 minutes, covering a distance of 1,742 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 35,475 feet to 36,968 feet, an increase of 1,493 feet, in just 2 minutes and covering 13 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase that followed started 43 miles northeast of FX5 Thurston Lake, Canada, and lasted for 238 minutes, covering a distance of 1,926 nautical miles. As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent, which started 5 miles east of Cropseyville, New York, and took 14 minutes to descend from 37,004 feet to 7,056 feet, a decrease of 29,948 feet, covering a distance of 99 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another level cruise phase, which started 1 mile north of Lexington, Massachusetts, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase that followed started overhead Melrose, Massachusetts, and took 2 minutes to descend from 7,000 feet to 6,029 feet, a decrease of 971 feet, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another level cruise phase, which started 1 mile southeast of Winthrop, Massachusetts, and lasted for 7 minutes, covering a distance of 28 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase that followed started 1 mile northwest of Easton, Massachusetts, and took 4 minutes to descend from 5,846 feet to 1,297 feet, a decrease of 4,549 feet, covering a distance of 16 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 04R at KBOS Logan International
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at KBOS Logan International Airport on runway 04R, achieving a high score of 95.7%. The final approach was conducted from the south, heading 20.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,260 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was well-executed, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 141 knots, which is within the acceptable range.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's performance was satisfactory, with a touchdown distance of 429 meters, which is within the expected range. However, the touchdown speed of 137 knots was slightly faster than the ideal speed, indicating that the pilots may have needed to apply more braking force upon touchdown. The touchdown rate of -341 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting that the aircraft's wheels made contact with the runway with a moderate amount of force.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C and a wind speed of 3 knots from 225°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the tailwind component was 2 knots, which had a negligible effect on the aircraft's performance.
The total landing distance of 1,878 meters was 81% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft's performance was satisfactory, with only minor deviations from the ideal touchdown speed.
