Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,925 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,925 m of the 3,412 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 326 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A330-900, then departed from runway 10L at SBGR André Franco Montoro International Airport in São Paulo, Brazil. The takeoff distance was 1,873 meters, which accounted for 53% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 166 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of the airport, it encountered local weather conditions of 26°C temperature and a wind speed of 11 knots at 79°. The crosswind was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind was 11 knots. The enroute climb started 2 miles northeast of the airport, where the aircraft climbed from 3,479 feet above sea level to 38,143 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,664 feet in 29 minutes, covering a distance of 204 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 25 miles south of Marica, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and lasted for 357 minutes, covering a distance of 3,147 nautical miles. The aircraft then encountered another enroute climb, this time starting 85 miles west of FAWY Vredenburg Airport in South Africa. The climb from 37,699 feet to 39,484 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,784 feet, took only 3 minutes and covered a distance of 30 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed 66 miles west of FAVQ Papendorp Airport in South Africa and lasted for 78 minutes, covering a distance of 622 nautical miles. As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent, starting 17 miles west of FAKO Komga Airport in South Africa. The descent from 40,127 feet to 8,113 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,013 feet, took 16 minutes and covered a distance of 87 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise, starting 2 miles northwest of FAJH Panorama Airfield in Johannesburg, South Africa, and lasting for 5 minutes, covering a distance of 9 nautical miles. The enroute descent resumed 5 miles southeast of Alberton, Gauteng, South Africa, where the aircraft descended from 8,109 feet to 6,789 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,320 feet, in 2 minutes and covered a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 03R at FAOR O.R. Tambo International Airport was made from the south, heading 16.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,262 feet above ground level. The landing on the runway was successful, with a touchdown distance of 328 meters, which was good. However, the touchdown speed of 142 knots was a little fast, and the touchdown rate was hard at -471 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 8.6 meters from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 16°C temperature and a wind speed of 15 knots at 349°. The crosswind was 6 knots, while the headwind was 14 knots. The total landing distance was 1,855 meters, which accounted for 54% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.0 meters from the centreline.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 17 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 4,115 nautical miles, taking a total of 513 minutes, and the aircraft used 44,723 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A330-900 aircraft successfully landed at O.R. Tambo International Airport's runway 03R, achieving a score of 93.8%. The final approach was initiated from the south, heading 16.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,262 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 142 knots. However, the touchdown speed of 142 knots was slightly faster than ideal, which may have contributed to a harder touchdown rate of -471 feet per minute (fpm). The touchdown distance of 328 meters was within acceptable limits.
The landing distance of 1,855 meters was 54% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft had sufficient stopping power. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 8.6 meters from the centreline, which may have affected the aircraft's rollout alignment. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 8.0 meters from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 15 knots from 349°. The crosswind component was 6 knots, while the headwind component was 14 knots. These conditions may have contributed to the slight misalignment of the aircraft during touchdown and rollout.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor issues with the touchdown speed and alignment. The pilots' skills and the aircraft's performance were satisfactory, but there is room for improvement to achieve a perfect score.
