Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,807 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 405 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-900, then departed from runway 32 at KSGF Springfield Branson National Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,232 meters, which accounted for 51% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 149 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 15°C, with a wind speed of 5 knots at a direction of 40°. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 1 knot. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northwest of KSGF Springfield Branson National Airport. The climb took 30 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 2,255 feet above sea level to 38,076 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,821 feet. The distance covered during this period was 211 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, starting overhead 24KS Blocker Field Haven in Kansas. This phase lasted for 91 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 783 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 2 miles west of KPIO Pioche Airport in Nevada. The descent took 18 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 38,221 feet above sea level to 2,831 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,390 feet. The distance covered during this period was 250 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, starting 1 mile north of Minkler in California. This phase lasted for only 2 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 1 mile southeast of Sanger in California. The descent took 2 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 2,719 feet above sea level to 1,619 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,099 feet. The distance covered during this period was 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 29R at KFAT Fresno Yosemite International Airport was made from the southeast, with a heading of 305.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,272 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 29R, which had a length of 2,807 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 132 knots. The touchdown distance was 406 meters, and the touchdown speed was 124 knots, both of which were good. The touchdown rate was smooth at -128 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 17°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots at a direction of 320°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 3 knots. The total landing distance was 896 meters, which accounted for 32% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took only 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,265 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 152 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 8,674 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-900 aircraft successfully landed at KFAT Fresno Yosemite International Airport, demonstrating exceptional piloting skills and adherence to standard operating procedures. The final approach to runway 29R was executed from the southeast, heading 305.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,272 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft's approach speed and threshold height were well within the acceptable limits, with a threshold speed of 132 knots and a good threshold height. This indicates that the pilots maintained a stable and controlled descent, allowing for a smooth touchdown. The touchdown distance of 406 meters was also within the expected range, further emphasizing the pilots' skill and attention to detail.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 17°C and a gentle wind of 4 knots at 320°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 3 knots, providing a relatively stable and predictable environment for the landing. The pilots effectively managed these conditions to achieve a smooth touchdown speed of 124 knots.
The touchdown rate of -128 feet per minute (fpm) was also smooth, indicating that the aircraft's descent was well-controlled and gradual. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, demonstrating the pilots' ability to maintain a stable and aligned approach.
The total landing distance of 896 meters, which accounted for only 32% of the runway length, was impressive. This suggests that the pilots executed a precise and controlled landing, minimizing the distance required to come to a stop. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, further emphasizing the pilots' skill and attention to detail.
Overall, this landing was a testament to the pilots' expertise and the aircraft's capabilities. The Boeing 737-900 performed flawlessly, and the pilots demonstrated exceptional piloting skills, resulting in a safe and successful landing at KFAT Fresno Yosemite International Airport.
