Shorten the long landing
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,108 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 895 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 30 at VOMM Chennai International Airport. The Cessna 152 aircraft accelerated down the runway, reaching a liftoff speed of 86 kt. The takeoff distance was 380 m, which accounted for 18% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 35 °C and a wind speed of 23 kt blowing from the west.
After taking off, the aircraft entered a right-hand pattern, navigating the circuit in a clockwise direction. The entry into the pattern was smooth, with the aircraft covering a distance of less than 1 nm in 56 seconds. The right-hand pattern crosswind was moderate, with the aircraft taking less than 1 nm to complete the turn in 8 seconds.
The pilot then initiated a pattern downwind turn, which involved a 45-degree angle to the runway. The distance covered during this turn was 2 nm, and the aircraft maintained a steady heading of 99.5 °. The downwind leg was short, lasting less than 1 nm in 4 seconds. The base leg turn was another 45-degree angle to the runway, with the aircraft covering a distance of 2 nm and maintaining a heading of 107.9 °.
The base leg was brief, lasting less than 1 nm in 4 seconds. The final turn into the runway was the longest, covering a distance of 3 nm in 264 seconds. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 12, which was located to the west. The heading during the final approach was 103.0 °, and the aircraft was at an altitude of 745 ft above ground level (agl) and 1 nm from the runway.
The landing on runway 12 was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a distance of 397 m. However, the touchdown speed was excessively fast at 59 kt, and the touchdown rate was heavy at -624 fpm. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 7.4 m. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 34 °C and a wind speed of 22 kt blowing from the west.
The total landing distance was 694 m, which accounted for 33% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned from the centreline by 52.7 m. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, covering a distance of less than 1 nm in less than 1 minute.
The total flight distance was 6 nm, and the flight duration was 9 minutes. The aircraft used 1 kg of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna 152 aircraft has successfully landed at VOMM Chennai International Airport, but the landing was not without its issues. The final approach to runway 12 from the west was initiated at a height of 745 feet above ground level (agl) and a distance of 1 nautical mile from the runway. The aircraft was heading 103.0° at the time of the approach.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down at a speed of 59 knots, which was excessively fast. This resulted in a heavy touchdown rate of -624 feet per minute (fpm), indicating that the aircraft was descending rapidly upon touchdown. The touchdown distance of 397 meters was considered good, but the excessive speed and heavy touchdown rate suggest that the pilot may have been unable to maintain a stable approach.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.4 meters from the centerline, which may have contributed to the issues with the rollout alignment. The runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned by 52.7 meters from the centerline, indicating that the aircraft was not tracking the centerline of the runway during the rollout phase.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were hot and windy, with a temperature of 34°C and winds of 22 knots from 270°. The crosswind component was 10 knots, while the tailwind component was 20 knots. These conditions may have made the landing more challenging for the pilot.
Overall, while the Cessna 152 aircraft was able to land safely at VOMM Chennai International Airport, the landing was not without its issues. The excessive speed and heavy touchdown rate, combined with the misaligned runway touchdown position and rollout alignment, suggest that the pilot may have been able to improve the landing by making adjustments to the approach and rollout phases.
