Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,020 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,344 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The Airbus A320 then departed from runway 22L at KORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport, with a takeoff distance of 5,736 feet, which accounted for 71% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 152 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 79°F and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 280°.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it started its enroute climb 1 mile south east of Bensenville, Illinois. The climb took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 132 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,687 feet above sea level to 37,258 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,571 feet. The enroute level cruise then began 1 mile west of Jamestown, Indiana, and lasted for 52 minutes, covering a distance of 412 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 3 miles west of Greensboro, Georgia, and took 21 minutes to complete, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 37,234 feet above sea level to 1,373 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,860 feet. The descent covered a distance of 103 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 14 at KAZE Hazlehurst Airport was made from the north west, with the aircraft heading 140.0° at an altitude of 1,140 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing on runway 14 at KAZE Hazlehurst Airport was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 124 knots and a touchdown distance of 1,340 feet, which accounted for 72% of the runway. The touchdown rate was fair at -236 feet per minute, but the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 83°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 76°.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 656 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 106 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 8,485 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at KAZE Hazlehurst Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its approach and landing procedures. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the north-west, heading 140.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,140 feet above ground level (agl). This positioning allowed the pilots to maintain a stable and controlled descent onto the runway.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 14, which has a length of 5,020 feet. The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the pilots maintained a safe and controlled approach to the runway. The threshold speed of 131 knots was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilots' ability to manage the aircraft's speed during the final approach.
The touchdown distance of 1,340 feet was also reported as good, indicating that the pilots maintained a stable and controlled descent onto the runway. The touchdown speed of 124 knots was within the acceptable range, further demonstrating the pilots' ability to manage the aircraft's speed during the landing. However, the touchdown rate of -236 feet per minute (fpm) was reported as fair, suggesting that the pilots may have been able to maintain a more stable and controlled descent.
Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilots maintained a stable and controlled approach to the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 83°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from 76°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, and the headwind component was 1 knot, which did not significantly impact the landing.
The total landing distance of 3,609 feet was 72% of the runway length, indicating that the pilots maintained a stable and controlled descent onto the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilots maintained a stable and controlled rollout after touchdown. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilots demonstrated a high level of proficiency in their approach and landing procedures.
