Slow down before tight turns
Twenty knots on a monitor produces the visual sensation of about ten. The advice to "taxi at a walking pace" cannot fix this, because your sense of walking pace is exactly the thing that's broken. Put the groundspeed readout in your scan and obey it for the next fifty flights, the way a student pilot leans on the airspeed indicator before learning to read attitude.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,416 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 384 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an F-35C Lightning, then departed from runway 26 at EGTE Exeter International Airport. The takeoff distance was 975 meters, which accounted for 48% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 198 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 270 degrees.
The crosswind was minimal, at 1 knot, while the headwind was 6 knots. As the aircraft took off, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead Clyst Honiton in Devon, England. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,112 feet above sea level to 30,008 feet above sea level, an increase of 28,895 feet, in just 9 minutes and covering a distance of 65 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began 12 miles south east of Swanage in Dorset, England. This phase of the flight lasted for 65 minutes and covered a distance of 652 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent, which began 2 miles south west of Selzthal in Steiermark, Austria. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 29,622 feet above sea level to 3,852 feet above sea level, a decrease of 25,770 feet, in just 8 minutes and covering a distance of 30 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 26L at LOXZ Hinterstoisser Air Base was made from the east, heading 260 degrees, at an altitude of 1,594 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on the runway, which had a length of 2,416 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed at 151 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 386 meters, and the touchdown speed was 122 knots, which was also good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -248 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 269 degrees. The crosswind was minimal, at 1 knot, while the headwind was 6 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,153 meters, which accounted for 48% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the aircraft was able to taxi to the parking area from the runway in just 2 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 754 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 90 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 7,593 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The F-35C Lightning aircraft successfully landed at LOXZ Hinterstoisser Air Base, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its landing capabilities. The final approach to runway 26L was executed from the east, heading 260.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,594 feet above ground level (agl). This approach was marked by a good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 151 knots, but still within an acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 386 meters was also good, indicating that the aircraft was able to slow down effectively after touchdown. The touchdown speed of 122 knots was also within the desired range, further emphasizing the aircraft's ability to land smoothly.
However, the touchdown rate of -248 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a slight bounce or oscillation upon touchdown. This could be attributed to various factors, including the aircraft's speed, altitude, or the runway's surface conditions. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 19°C and a wind speed of 6 knots from 269°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 6 knots, which did not significantly impact the landing. The total landing distance of 1,153 meters was 48% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance.
Finally, the runway rollout alignment was perfect, demonstrating the aircraft's ability to maintain control and stability after touchdown. Overall, the F-35C Lightning's landing performance at LOXZ Hinterstoisser Air Base was impressive, with a score of 98.2% indicating a high level of proficiency and skill.
