Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,299 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 314 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A319, then departed from runway 03 at LFRS Nantes Atlantique Airport in France. The takeoff distance was 1,412 meters, which is 52% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 150 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 10°C, with a wind speed of 9 knots at 119°. The crosswind component was 9 knots, while the headwind component was 0 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead LFRS Nantes Atlantique Airport and climbing from 801 feet above sea level to 35,972 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,170 feet in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 111 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 2 miles west of Saint-Cyr-la-Rosiere in France and lasted 41 minutes, covering a distance of 299 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time starting overhead EDUX Langenfeld Airfield in Germany and climbing from 36,018 feet above sea level to 36,664 feet above sea level, an increase of 646 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 2 miles south west of Sprockhoevel in Germany and descended from 36,541 feet above sea level to 36,009 feet above sea level, a decrease of 532 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute level cruise, this time starting 2 miles west of Dortmund in Germany and lasting 27 minutes, covering a distance of 212 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 5 miles east of Dahme in Germany and descended from 36,014 feet above sea level to 4,473 feet above sea level, a decrease of 31,541 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 107 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute level cruise, this time starting 2 miles south west of Bjaerred in Sweden and lasting 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 1 mile east of Loeddekoepinge in Sweden and descended from 4,011 feet above sea level to 1,472 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,538 feet in 4 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 22L at EKCH Copenhagen Kastrup Airport in Denmark, approaching from the north east at a heading of 221.0° and at an altitude of 1,451 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 22L was successful, with a touchdown distance of 314 meters and a touchdown speed of 124 knots. The touchdown rate was also good at -182 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.8 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 3°C, with a wind speed of 15 knots at 111°. The crosswind component was 14 knots, while the tailwind component was 5 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,318 meters, which is 40% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 9 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 780 nautical miles, taking 131 minutes, and the aircraft used 4,604 kilograms
The Airbus A319 successfully landed at EKCH Copenhagen Kastrup Airport, achieving a high score of 98.9%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north east, heading 221.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,451 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a critical aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was recorded at 129 knots, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 314 meters was also satisfactory, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft during the landing phase. The touchdown speed of 124 knots was within the recommended limits, and the touchdown rate of -182 feet per minute (fpm) was also good, suggesting a smooth and controlled descent.
However, there was a slight deviation in the runway touchdown position, with the aircraft being 4.8 meters off-centerline. This minor misalignment may have been due to various factors, including wind conditions or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 3°C and wind speeds of 15 knots at 111°. The crosswind component was 14 knots, while the tailwind component was 5 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,318 meters was 40% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilot had excellent control over the aircraft during the landing phase. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot had successfully brought the aircraft to a stop in a straight line.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated excellent skills and control over the aircraft. The minor deviation in the runway touchdown position was the only notable issue, but it did not significantly impact the overall performance of the landing.
