Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,058 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,058 ft of the 10,619 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,201 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A319, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KAZE Hazlehurst Airport. This process took approximately 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 32, with the aircraft taking off after covering 62% of the runway's length, which was 3,097 feet. The liftoff speed was 135 knots.
As the aircraft climbed into the air, it encountered local weather conditions of 76°F temperature and a wind speed of 1 knot at 310°. The crosswind was negligible, and the headwind was 1 knot. The enroute climb began approximately 1 mile southeast of Lumber City, Georgia, and continued for 19 minutes, covering a distance of 114 nautical miles. During this time, the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,149 feet above sea level to 37,993 feet.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 4 miles east of GE35 Southern Oaks Airport Bostwick, Georgia. This phase lasted for 82 minutes and covered a distance of 529 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, which started 20 miles northwest of New Buffalo, Michigan. The descent took 18 minutes to complete, covering a distance of 42 nautical miles, and resulted in a decrease in altitude from 38,105 feet to 2,032 feet.
The final approach to runway 09C at KORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport was made from the west, with the aircraft heading 90° at an altitude of 1,353 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 10,619 feet, and the threshold height was good. The threshold speed was also good at 133 knots, and the touchdown distance was 1,209 feet, which was 45% of the runway's length.
The touchdown speed was 124 knots, which was good, but the touchdown rate was fair at -285 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 68°F temperature and a wind speed of 4 knots at 99°, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 4 knots.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took approximately 9 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 692 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 134 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 10,266 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed on runway 09C at KORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport, showcasing a high level of precision and control. The aircraft's final approach from the west, heading 90.0° at 4 nm and 1,353 ft above ground level (agl), demonstrated a well-executed approach procedure.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down at a speed of 124 kt, which was within the acceptable threshold speed of 133 kt. The touchdown distance of 1,209 ft was also within the expected range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -285 fpm was only fair, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a slight bounce or oscillation upon touchdown.
Despite this minor issue, the overall performance of the aircraft was impressive. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot had successfully aligned the aircraft with the runway centerline. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 68°F and a headwind of 4 kt, did not appear to have any significant impact on the landing.
The total landing distance of 4,798 ft was 45% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilot had successfully managed the aircraft's speed and descent rate to achieve a smooth and controlled landing. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot had maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing roll.
Overall, the Airbus A319's landing on runway 09C at KORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport was a success, with a high level of precision and control demonstrated throughout the approach and landing phases.
