Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,590 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,590 m of the 2,996 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 401 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 21L at VTBD Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand. The takeoff distance was 1,894 meters, which was 60% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 164 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 140 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 6 knots and a headwind of 2 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile south of the airport, rising from an altitude of 1,024 feet above sea level to 30,313 feet above sea level, an increase of 29,289 feet, in 18 minutes and covering a distance of 75 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 1 mile south of Cha-am, Thailand, and lasted for 25 minutes, covering a distance of 187 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 19 miles southeast of Lang Suan, Thailand, descending from 31,107 feet above sea level to 1,305 feet above sea level, a decrease of 29,803 feet, in 27 minutes and covering a distance of 116 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 09 at VTSP Phuket International Airport was made from the west, heading 85.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,243 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 09, which had a length of 2,996 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 151 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 402 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 149 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -314 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.6 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 32 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 100 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 8 knots. The total landing distance was 1,513 meters, which was 50% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 388 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 89 minutes. The aircraft used 3,680 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at VTSP Phuket International Airport, achieving a score of 97.4%. The final approach to runway 09 was conducted from the west, heading 85.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,243 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 151 knots, which was slightly above the target threshold speed. However, the touchdown distance of 402 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 149 knots was a little fast, but the firm touchdown rate of -314 feet per minute suggests that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact effectively.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.6 meters from the centerline, which may require some adjustments to the aircraft's approach path to improve accuracy. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 32°C and a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 100°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 8 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly fast touchdown speed.
The total landing distance of 1,513 meters was 50% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable and controlled trajectory during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and stability throughout the approach and landing phases.
