Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 9,517 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,842 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-MAX8, then departed from runway 31R at KDAL Dallas Love Field. The takeoff distance was 4,234 feet, which accounted for 58% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 153 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 63°F and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 304°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 9 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile northwest of KDAL Dallas Love Field, rising from an altitude of 1,507 feet above sea level to 31,073 feet above sea level, an increase of 29,566 feet, in 14 minutes and covering a distance of 64 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile east of 86TE Matthews Ranch Airport in Santo, Texas. This phase lasted for 18 minutes and covered a distance of 121 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 11 miles southwest of 86XS Gesin Ranches Airport in Sweetwater, Texas, descending from 31,895 feet above sea level to 4,692 feet above sea level, a decrease of 27,203 feet, in 16 minutes and covering a distance of 86 nautical miles.
The aircraft entered another level cruise phase, which started 8 miles east of TE33 Eagles Nest Gliderport in Odessa, Texas, and lasted for 5 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 34L at KMAF Midland International Air and Space Port was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 356.0° at an altitude of 1,613 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing on runway 34L was successful, with the touchdown point being 1,445 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 134 knots, which was good, while the touchdown rate was fair at -265 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 17 feet from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 50°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 20°, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 4,600 feet, which accounted for 48% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 28 feet from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 291 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 67 minutes. The aircraft used 5,827 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 aircraft successfully landed at KMAF Midland International Air and Space Port, with a score of 84.2%. The final approach to runway 34L was initiated from the south, heading 356.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,613 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was characterized by a good threshold speed of 146 knots, which is within the acceptable range for a safe landing.
However, the threshold height at 82 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal approach path. Despite this, the touchdown point was 1,445 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 134 knots was also within the acceptable range, indicating a good control of the aircraft's descent.
The touchdown rate of -265 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, suggesting that the aircraft's descent was not as smooth as it could have been. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 17 feet from the centreline, which may have contributed to the slightly higher touchdown rate.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 50°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 20°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 2 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly higher touchdown rate.
The total landing distance of 4,600 feet was 48% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 28 feet from the centreline, which may have contributed to the slightly higher touchdown rate.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor deviations from the ideal approach path and touchdown conditions. These deviations were likely due to a combination of factors, including the slightly above-target threshold height and the slightly misaligned runway touchdown position.
