Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,713 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 990 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A380-800 taxied from the parking area to runway 26R at Munich Airport (EDDM) in 9 minutes, covering 2 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 26R, the aircraft accelerated over 2,106 m (53 % of the runway) and lifted off at 155 kt; local weather reported a temperature of 17 °C, wind 2 kt from 354°, with a 2 kt cross-wind and no head-wind.
The initial climb began 2 mi north-west of Hallbergmoos, climbing from 2,490 ft asl to 32,000 ft asl-a gain of 29,509 ft-in 18 minutes while covering 112 nm.
Level cruise commenced 1 mi north-east of Kirchlauter and continued for 117 minutes, during which the aircraft flew 863 nm.
A second climb started 36 mi south-east of Sumba in the Faroe Islands, raising altitude from 32,004 ft asl to 34,000 ft asl, an increase of 1,996 ft in 3 minutes and covering 26 nm.
The subsequent cruise segment began 10 mi south of Sumba and lasted 606 minutes, with a distance of 4,816 nm traversed.
Descent began 13 mi north-east of the waypoint 2CA8 B, descending from 33,784 ft asl to 3,994 ft asl, a loss of 29,790 ft in 18 minutes while covering 97 nm.
A brief cruise over Whittier, California, lasted 2 minutes and spanned 4 nm.
The next descent started 1 mi north-east of Bell Gardens, California, dropping from 4,055 ft asl to 1,393 ft asl, a decrease of 2,662 ft in 3 minutes and covering 9 nm.
Final approach to runway 24R at Los Angeles International Airport (KLAX) reduced altitude from 1,305 ft agl to 61 ft agl in 97 seconds, with the aircraft scoring on the stabilisation gates.
Landing on runway 24R was executed with a threshold speed of 143 kt; touchdown occurred 563 m beyond the touchdown zone at 108 kt, with a vertical speed of minus 157 fpm and very good alignment, while local weather recorded a temperature of 21 °C, wind 7 kt from 250°, a 2 kt cross-wind and a 7 kt head-wind.
The rollout covered a total landing distance of 1,275 m, representing 47 % of the runway, and alignment during rollout was perfect.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in 6 minutes, traveling less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 5,938 nm, lasted 786 minutes, and consumed 171,700 kg of fuel.
The Airbus A380-800 executed a stabilised approach at the 1,000 ft gate to runway 24R at KLAX, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope, centreline and speed all within limits. The aircraft descended from 1,305 ft agl to 61 ft agl in 97 seconds under clear conditions, temperature 21 °C, wind 7 kt from 250°, crosswind 2 kt and head-wind component 7 kt.
At threshold the speed was slightly above target at 143 kt and the aircraft maintained a good threshold height before initiating flare.
Touchdown occurred 563 m beyond the touchdown zone with a speed of 108 kt and a vertical rate of minus 157 fpm; runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The rollout covered a total landing distance of 1,275 m, representing 47 % of the 2,713 m runway, and rollout alignment was perfect.
Reduce the threshold speed to meet the target value and aim to touch down nearer the 300 m (1,000 ft) aim point to keep the landing distance comfortably within runway limits.
