Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,727 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,727 m of the 2,736 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 341 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The CRJ900 aircraft departed from runway 35 at Pocatello Regional Airport, KPIH, with a takeoff distance of 1,921 meters, which is 88% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 160 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 6 knots from 300 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 3 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started 1 mile north of the airport and reached an altitude of 7,806 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,369 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise began 5 miles north of Tyhee, Idaho, and lasted for 7 minutes, covering a distance of 29 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 03 at Idaho Falls Regional Airport, KIDA, was initiated from the southwest, heading 38.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,140 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 03 was successful, with a threshold speed of 133 knots and a touchdown speed of 124 knots. The touchdown distance was 343 meters, which is 60% of the runway length.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 5 knots from 340 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 2 knots. The touchdown rate was very hard at -545 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.2 meters from the centerline. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 8.2 meters from the centerline.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking 7 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 44 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 19 minutes. The aircraft used 613 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The CRJ900 aircraft successfully landed at KIDA Idaho Falls Regional Airport, achieving a score of 94.2%. The final approach was conducted from the southwest, heading 38.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,140 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 03, which has a length of 2,736 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed of 133 knots was also within acceptable limits. The touchdown distance of 343 meters was within the expected range, and the touchdown speed of 124 knots was also good. However, the touchdown rate was quite hard, at -545 feet per minute (fpm), which may indicate a slightly aggressive approach.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 4.2 meters, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach path. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were mild, with a temperature of 13°C and a light wind of 5 knots from 340°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,646 meters was 60% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. However, the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned from the centerline by 8.2 meters, which may indicate a slight deviation in the aircraft's direction during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor deviations from the ideal approach and touchdown.
