Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: off the runway's 3° glideslope.
At the 500 ft gate: off the runway's 3° glideslope.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 921 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 921 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 499 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 10 at ENSB Svalbard Airport, Longyear. The Cessna C172 aircraft took off after a distance of 478 meters, which accounted for 22% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 68 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 270 degrees. This resulted in a negligible crosswind and a slight tailwind.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead ENSB Svalbard Airport, Longyear. The aircraft ascended from an initial altitude of 846 feet above sea level to a maximum altitude of 8,046 feet, an increase of 7,200 feet in just 10 minutes. During this climb, the aircraft covered a distance of 14 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began 13 miles northwest of ENSB Svalbard Airport, Longyear. This phase of the flight lasted for 18 minutes and covered a distance of 29 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent, which started 16 miles southeast of EN67 Broggerhalvoya. The aircraft descended from an altitude of 6,416 feet to 5,965 feet, a decrease of 451 feet in just 2 minutes. This descent phase covered a distance of 3 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which began 13 miles southeast of EN67 Broggerhalvoya. This phase of the flight lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles.
The final descent phase began 11 miles southeast of EN67 Broggerhalvoya and saw the aircraft descend from an altitude of 5,668 feet to 1,868 feet, a decrease of 3,801 feet in 8 minutes. This descent phase covered a distance of 8 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 30 at ENAS Ny-Ålesund Airport, Hamnerabben, which was located to the southeast. The aircraft was heading 299.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,728 feet above ground level and was 3 nautical miles from the runway.
The aircraft landed on runway 30, which had a length of 921 meters. The threshold height at 158 feet above ground level was excessively over target, while the threshold speed was a little below target at 52 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 339 meters, and the touchdown speed was also good at 53 knots. However, the touchdown rate was very heavy at -719 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.9 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 270 degrees, resulting in a negligible crosswind and a slight headwind.
The total landing distance was 530 meters, which accounted for 58% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The total flight distance was 60 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 44 minutes. The aircraft used 17 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed at ENAS Ny-Ålesund Airport, Hamnerabben, with a score of 75.0%. The final approach was conducted from the south east, heading 299.0° at 3 nautical miles and 1,728 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 30, which has a length of 921 meters.
The threshold height at 158 feet agl was excessively over target, indicating that the aircraft descended more than necessary before reaching the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was a little below target at 52 knots, suggesting that the pilot managed to control the aircraft's speed effectively. The touchdown distance of 339 meters was considered good, and the touchdown speed of 53 knots was also within acceptable limits.
Unfortunately, the touchdown rate was very heavy at -719 feet per minute (fpm), which may indicate that the pilot could have applied a smoother touchdown. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.9 meters from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's alignment during the approach.
The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°. The crosswind and headwind components were both 1 knot, which suggests that the aircraft was not significantly affected by wind during the landing.
The total landing distance of 530 meters was 58% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot managed to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, while there were some areas for improvement, the pilot demonstrated good control and management of the aircraft during the landing.
