Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 3,886 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the full 3,886 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,082 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 21 at the NV54 Flying S Ranch Ultralightport. The aircraft, a Piper PA28-236 Dakota, took off with a takeoff distance of 495 feet, which accounted for 51% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 61 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time were characterized by a temperature of 54°F and a wind speed of 5 knots at 179°.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile northwest of the 74P Calvada Meadows Pahrump, ascending from an initial altitude of 3,663 feet above sea level to 3,106 feet above sea level. This climb of 557 feet in 2 minutes covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 33 at the NV74 Calvada Meadows Airport, heading southeast at an altitude of 361 feet above ground level.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 33, which had a length of 3,886 feet. The threshold height at 284 feet above ground level was excessively over target, and the threshold speed was well above target at 82 knots. The touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway, and the touchdown speed of 78 knots was too fast. However, the touchdown rate was firm at -371 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 54°F and a wind speed of 5 knots at 180°, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a tailwind of 5 knots. The total landing distance was 3,378 feet, which accounted for 87% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 4 nautical miles and used 4 pounds of fuel, taking a total of 5 minutes to complete.
The Piper PA28-236 Dakota aircraft successfully landed at NV74 Calvada Meadows Airport, but the landing was not without its issues. The pilot's final approach to runway 33 from the south east, heading 319.0°, was executed at 0 nm and 361 ft above ground level (agl). However, the threshold height at 284 ft agl was excessively over target, indicating that the pilot may have been too high on their approach.
Upon landing, the pilot's threshold speed was well above the target speed of 82 kt, which could have contributed to the long touchdown distance. The touchdown point was indeed very long, using more than 50% of the available runway, and the touchdown speed of 78 kt was also too fast. The firm touchdown rate of -371 fpm suggests that the pilot may have been applying too much force on the controls during the landing.
Despite these issues, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot had good control of the aircraft during the final stages of the approach. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 54°F and a wind of 5 kt at 180°, were relatively calm, with a slight tailwind of 5 kt. However, the crosswind was minimal at 1 kt.
The total landing distance of 3,378 ft was 87% of the available runway length of 3,886 ft, which is a relatively long distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot had good control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the pilot demonstrated good control of the aircraft during the final stages of the approach and the rollout phase. However, there is room for improvement in terms of approach speed, touchdown speed, and touchdown distance.
