Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 8,504 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,213 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport took approximately 8 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The Boeing 737-800 then began its departure roll on runway 25R, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 165 knots. The takeoff distance of 6,433 feet represented 63% of the available runway length. Local weather conditions at the time of departure included a temperature of 80°F and a 5-knot headwind from a direction of 270°.
As the aircraft climbed out of Phoenix, it began its enroute climb approximately 1 mile southeast of Central City, Arizona. The climb phase lasted 21 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 2,093 feet above sea level to 36,992 feet, an increase of 34,899 feet. The enroute climb covered a distance of 144 nautical miles. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 8 miles northeast of the Winchester Farm Airstrip near Willcox, Arizona. This phase lasted 58 minutes and covered 457 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase began 10 miles southwest of the Perry Ranch Airport near Ozona, Texas, and lasted 26 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 36,993 feet to 2,083 feet, a decrease of 34,910 feet. The total enroute distance covered during the flight was 755 nautical miles.
The Boeing 737-800 began its final approach to runway 13R at San Antonio International Airport from the northwest, heading 132.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,252 feet above ground level. The landing was executed with a threshold speed slightly above target at 146 knots. The touchdown distance was 1,218 feet, and the touchdown speed was 143 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -255 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The total landing distance was 4,574 feet, representing 54% of the available runway length. Taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total fuel consumption for the flight was 10,285 pounds.
The Boeing 737-800 touched down smoothly on runway 13R at KSAT San Antonio International Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in the landing phase. The aircraft's approach quality was excellent, with a good threshold height and a slight deviation in threshold speed, registering 146 kt, which was marginally above the target. The touchdown distance of 1,218 ft was within acceptable limits, indicating a well-executed flare.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was a little fast at 143 kt, and the touchdown rate of -255 fpm was fair. However, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, with the aircraft centered on the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 81 °F and a headwind of 11 kt, contributed to a relatively straightforward landing. The crosswind component was minimal, at 1 kt, which further facilitated a smooth touchdown.
The Boeing 737-800's rollout was characterized by perfect alignment, with the aircraft remaining centered on the runway. The total landing distance of 4,574 ft, which accounted for 54% of the runway length, was within acceptable limits. Overall, the landing was deemed highly satisfactory, with a score of 99.5%, reflecting the crew's exceptional skill and attention to detail.
