Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,130 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 555 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 15 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 05L at Manchester Airport (EGCC), with a takeoff distance of 1,378 meters, which was 57% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 162 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 10°C, with a wind speed of 10 knots at 79°. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 9 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Manchester Airport, where it climbed from 1,297 feet above sea level to 4,803 feet, an increase of 3,506 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started overhead City Airport Manchester, where the aircraft maintained its altitude for 2 minutes, covering another 7 nautical miles. The next enroute climb began overhead Newton-le-Willows, where the aircraft climbed from 4,797 feet to 34,402 feet, an increase of 29,605 feet in 21 minutes, covering a distance of 127 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise then continued for 58 minutes, covering a distance of 387 nautical miles, starting overhead Locking. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 84 miles north of Noja, Spain, where it descended from 33,985 feet to 1,587 feet, a decrease of 32,399 feet in 27 minutes, covering a distance of 98 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 30 at Bilbao Airport (LEBB) was made from the south-east, heading 297.0°, at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,456 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 30, which had a length of 2,130 meters. The threshold height was above the target, but the threshold speed was good at 144 knots.
The touchdown point was 146 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 141 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -217 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 7°C, with a wind speed of 6 knots at 260°, resulting in a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 5 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,320 meters, which was 62% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.8 meters from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 634 nautical miles, taking 128 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,722 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LEBB Bilbao Airport, achieving an overall score of 88.5%. The final approach to runway 30 was initiated from the south east, with a heading of 297.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,456 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with the threshold height being above the target at 69 feet agl. However, the threshold speed was satisfactory at 144 knots, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown point was located 146 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended landing spot.
The touchdown speed of 141 knots was slightly faster than the desired speed, which could have resulted in a slightly longer landing distance. Nevertheless, the touchdown rate of -217 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, suggesting a relatively smooth and controlled touchdown. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway during the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 7°C and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 260°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots. These conditions were relatively calm and did not pose a significant challenge to the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,320 meters was 62% of the available runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.8 meters from the centerline, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended path during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a satisfactory score of 88.5%. While there were some minor deviations from the desired landing parameters, the pilot's skills and the aircraft's performance were sufficient to ensure a safe and controlled landing.
